  1. That's still 2 percent difference in iginla and matthews salary cap, it's not gonna help em depth wise and is gonna be a bad move in later years

  2. It’s not bad in a vacuum, it’s bad because the rest of the core in Toronto along with this contract take up too much of the leafs cap space

  3. people forget the NHL is a business. such a joke that ppl are complaining abt his contract and how it isn’t “team friendly” the business aspect isn’t only applied to gms and owners… if u want something that somebody else has, you gotta pay what they’re asking for. Leafs wanted Matthews and they paid for him. end of discussion.

  4. Honestly with how much the rest of the core four make someone is gunna go (Nylander is as good as gone)

  5. Only an idiot would pretend this is a bad deal tbh. It is even a lower cap % than his old contract and on the market he could have easily got more.

  6. Everyone in the hockey world is just super butthurt because Matthews wants to be a leaf. Everyone was wrong. And now they're saying his contract sucks. LMAO!

  7. Wish it was a lil less money, but I guess he could have shafted them more if wanted to, ain't no way Brad's having another Johnny G and Tkachuk situation

  8. Are you forgetting that Nylander and Marner are going to have to sign at some point too? That really sets the standard for him. Enjoy having half of the teams cap being spent on 3 bums

  9. Great contract for Matthews, bad contract for Toronto as an organization looking to actually win in the post-season.

  10. Even though the salary cap will go up. This still isn’t a good contract for the leafs and it definitely isn’t team friendly for the next 2 years

  11. It’s not a horrible contract but should have taken 11 12 mil and also needs to be a better playoff player

  12. He had a "down" season this year because he was out with injury. If he was healthy most of the year, he easily gets 50+ goals.

  13. Oops, no he doesn't have a 65 goal season. Also, while "best player in the league=best $$" isn't specifically true, it is the general intent of compensation. Might make an argument for top 10 in the league, but 22nd in scoring this past season doesn't do much for even that argument. This is at least 3 million too much for a proven to be inconsistent player.

  14. For those saying he could've easily walked; it's the same argument people have about McDavid/Drai leaving Edm. I don't think fans understand that for superstar caliber player, being on a competitive roster is more important to them than anything. So for Matthews or McDavid to leave their respective teams, another competitor will have to take them. There is no possible was a true competing team in the salary cap era can clear 13-15m in cap space for one player and still be a contending team. There is a reason superstar players only move teams near the end of their careers when they don't care about the bag and sign for low amounts.

There are a few exceptions of course like Tavares, but even with that one, look at the Leafs cap struggles with him on the roster. Another is Eichel. Though the Eichel shit with Buffalo was boiling for a lot of years before he requested out. It's just not common- for obvious reasons- for superstar players to move teams in their prime.

I think Matthews re-signs again in toronto after this contract is up if 1) He is the same caliber of player, and 2) Toronto is still a powerhouse. If one or both of those things are not fact when his new contract is up then and only then could I see him moving teams, no matter the bag.

  15. Normally i agree with you but this is a horrible contract foŕ a guy who has consistently given up the moment post season come around. Matthews essentially just got a 4 yr 13 mil contract to go play golf during the playoffs

  16. Does Johnny Hawkey understand the concept of economics. Check in the next couple seasons how expensive it will be to see a game compared to this season and many are already complaining about the prices for tickets and other goodies. Only a couple of teams can afford to dole out 85 million or more when the cap raises. Most other teams will need to depend on their sales etc.

  17. This contract shows that all this guy cares about is getting the bag. He could have taken an 8 year deal but no, he has to get another payday in a few years when the cap goes up. God forbid he ends up on a deal that’s actually team friendly so that his team can bring in a better supporting cast. This is going to have another ripple effect with Marner and Nylander’s next contracts. There’s a reason the Leafs have been chasing defense for so many years.

  18. I just hope he finally shows up in the playoffs. Regular season doesn't mean squat if you can't get through the second round.

  19. In 4 years he will just accomplish what he's accomplishing now it'll just cost the Leafs more.

  20. If Matthews went to free agency today, you can bet the farm at least 5 teams would be offering him at least 15M/year. He is a Leaf until he turns 31. He’s also stated this is where he wants to be. Why can’t people stop trolling this deal? It’s a winner for both sides. Pretty good.

  21. If this was an 8yr deal I could agree, but at 4 its not a team friendly contract… He's clearly set on 4 year deals to maximize his earnings leaving less money on the table for his supporting cast as the cap rises. It will be a never ending cycle of the "core four" basing their salary off of Matthews' deal essentially making the rise in cap null and void because after signing Marner, Nyldander etc. he'll be due for another 2 mil raise…

  22. Seeing this Leafs Core 4 with their playoff disappointments is just fun and interesting. Watching these Leafs struggle is the best option for Leafs fans and followers. Matthews new contract provides security – even for Leafs trolls.

  23. The problem is raises for Matthews, Nylander and potentially Marner will eat up any increases to the cap, so the team that isn't close to being cup contenders won't have the financial flexibility to improve the roster.
