RED WINGS CONTRACTS & PROSPECT TIMELINES – Winged Wheel Podcast – Aug. 20th, 2023

As the dust from Steve Yzerman’s trade for Jeff Petry settles, a lot of conversation has surrounded the “Yzerplan” and the Detroit Red Wings salary cap structure.

Tune in as we discuss how Yzerman’s contract structure in Detroit is set up, and what it means for Hockeytown’s future. Do the Red Wings have the core around Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider already, or does it depend on Marco Kasper, Nate Danielson, and Axel Sandin Pellikka? How do Chiarot, Copp, Compher, and others factor in? Is Walman part of Detroit’s long-term future? All of that & more (3:55).

Next we discuss the realistic timelines for Detroit’s top prospects (Kasper, Edvinsson, Danielson, Lombardi, Mazur, Cossa, Wallinder, Johansson, Sandin Pellikka) to reach the Red Wings, how long they might spend in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, & plenty more (30:45) before we take your questions and comments during Overtime (55:10) – enjoy!

  1. This may be a reach but we need more than just 1 prospect graduating every year as Brad was saying. Obviously not rush things but some luck would help even with some 2nd and 3rd round draft picks panning out and being reliable everyday guys. That's how you build teams along with with free agents and trades

  2. This team was in the wild card race last year until the deadline and played majority of the year without vrana and bertuzzi. We have massively upgraded, I don't know why it's such a crazy concept that we would be one of the teams competing for a wild card spot.

  3. Im more concerned about the prospects than the contract's.
For example, as long as copp and compher play well for the next 2-3 years, thats great. They are stop gasps. As long as kasper and eventually danielson push them down the depth chart or make them expendable altogether, im not concerned about copp or compher's contracts.
The same could be said for holl, the chairot contract is the one that i will always dislike.

  4. What my personal optimism boils down to is how much better our scouting team is doing over other teams despite Detroit not being able to acquire a generational talent. I believe our team is a slow burn to being better and what the generic fan base doesn't realize is that it's a boring process and we aren't getting a Bedard so this is our best bet to depend on our prospects. Yzerman has already proven he can take an axe to the team to start over if he sees even the slightest regression in this team's performance doesn't meet his standards. I'm not expecting another Datsyuk, zetterberg, lindstrom kind of guy but I think we will find a similar lesser version them with the prospects we have other than Seider and Raymond. I think we have our core right now just not yet NHL ready. Ad long as Yzerman keeps a firm hand like he has so far then you shouldn't need to see another reset. FAs will come in time.
