No, he’s right. Let’s all blame Garth Snow for not trading him.

  2. xesrightyouknow

In hindsight trading him was a good idea but at the time he made it very clear he intended to stay. Which no longer makes trading him necessary. But he lied.

He pulled a deGrom and dipped tf out first chance he got

It’s 2023 and I don’t really care about John Tavares anymore. Hilarious snows contract only just ended w the isles though lmao

  4. SmashYourEnemies02

But you did by not getting negotiations started before his final season started, and not trading him at the deadline because he told you not to trade him. You’re a clown garth.

  5. spicy-succ

I’m definitely going to get downvoted but I think the hate for JT is very excessive and unnecessary

  6. Correct. The person to blame is Garth. He should’ve had a fucking spine and told JT “You sign an extension before the deadline or I trade you.”

  7. dukemantee

Like we give a shit what Garth Snow thinks about anything.

  8. They’re both to blame.

Tavares shouldn’t have said what he said and Garth should’ve said pen to paper by the deadline or you’re gone

  9. Flamdrag27

I flew from Orlando to NY for the infamous “return to Long Island game” so I could could voice my “appreciation” for how JT left.

Let me know when the Garth Snow appreciation night is so I can book my flight. Idiot.

    > I hope to stay in Long Island. There’s no doubt, a lot of positive things going forward with the organization and our team here, so I haven’t thought about being anywhere else but with the Islanders. ~ Some guy

  11. mouselipz

Unpopular opinion but I don’t give a shit. Anybody ever notice the COMPLETE lack of enthusiasm in Tavares’ voice when he’d say he was staying on the Island? If you didn’t, you’re an idiot. Any fool could tell he wasn’t staying. The whole situation was management’s fault. Of course, the same idiots won’t take Garth Snow’s word for it, why should they, he’s one of the few people who could absolutely know the truth /s

  12. fWARWhatIsItGoodFor

Omg can we please move on. Shit, the Leafs are my #2, I don’t like Tavares, but I just wish we could have an identity that just doesn’t invoke him

Also annoying we as a fanbase are now not allowed to appreciate the good memories of him on our team either

  13. Garth Snow got bored teaching kids how to play hockey and wants to get back into front office work with puff pieces lmao. Good luck with that when he’s the face of the failure that was the Tavares era and couldn’t even ink him to a contract at the end of it.

  14. liguy181

Has the New York Post ever published anything that was thought-provoking and generated useful discussion?

Garth Snow is a jackass and Pajama Boy is a pussy

He really didn’t. The isles could’ve traded him, they had to make the call whether to trade him or roll the nice and hope he re-signs. And the reason why it was a roll of the dice was because we were not in a great place as a franchise and the future was incredibly unclear. If the situation played out 2 years later, Tavares is an isle for life like Barzy is.

And heres the thing, i genuinely think Tavares considered staying here. At least at the deadline he truly didn’t have have his mind made up yet. The leafs ended up rolling out the red carpet a long 3 months after the season ended, and im sorry but you cant blame a Toronto kid for not passing up on that offer.

  17. czar4684

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…shut the FUCK up Garth Snow!

  18. Initial-Tea8717

I never thought he did anything wrong…Snow though absolutely did.

  19. I wish he didn’t do what he did but from his pov it made sense. Go play for your childhood team by basically gifting yourself to Toronto is a pretty sick move but an NHL team with any hope of winning it all simply can’t let a player like that get away with no return, what an absolute fumble from Snow.

  20. chuteboxhero

I’m sure Garth still would feel this way if he was GM at the time and had to deal with him dragging his feet having all these teams roll out the red carpet for him and then makes his decision after all of the other free agents were already signed.

  21. FriendlySlytherin

Lol five years later and this bloated schmuck decides to chime in?

  22. Good to know Garth now accepting all the blame.

  23. Fireislander

Did people not read the article or are we just ignoring this quote?

    > “That decision by Scott Malkin was that we weren’t gonna trade him under any circumstances,” Snow said. “He was totally committed to re-signing him. I think the quote I had said is, ‘Are you willing to drive the car off the cliff if you go through the season and get to free agency?’ He was comfortable with that. That’s the bottom line.”

  24. RealestJP

TL;DR for the article it’s all Malkin’s fault because he was overly hands on with Garth, and then for some reason stopped being hands on with Lou. Oh, and that Garth was willing to trade JT after he rejected a 10×8 but Malkin refused under any circumstance and took over negotiations

Personally, it seems like a bunch of bs but what do I know. Garth had a solid foundation here, if only we could develop any of our top picks while he was at the helm. He says at the end he wants another go at being GM and I think he deserves another shot (somewhere else)
