Matthews playing everyone in Toronto for fools and just saying what he needs to say. Why would he want to resign in Toronto when it’s clear they haven’t won anything for 100 years and won’t for the next 100, he could come back to the US for a better team, make more money and not have an insane media and fans breathing down his neck 24/7? Only way he goes back is if Toronto offers him a contract he can’t refuse and he is more about money than winning.

It's always about how much $$$ they can make. Sure there are alot of great players out there but are some really worth that much. I know some need it to live comfortably after they retire but seriously wonder what it's all about now. Is hockey to show who is the best team or who can afford to pay the highest salaries.
Coming from a bruins fan, I wouldn't worry to much. Pasta did this last year. Didn't sign until the trade deadline. I'm sure AM34 is signed before the end of the season.
It would make more sense if they get rid of nylander(to the eventual cup contender an winner) and prolly idk get 2 good defenders 1 stay home an the other a decent two way guy. NHL fans need to understand your star player doesnt care about you. Most players dont even care of winning the cup. They are trying to make the most $$$ in the short careers they have. There is nothing wrong with this. But dont take it personally if your star player doesnt take a discount.
It's bs that they really want to come back. You can't believe everything a player says…when they are trying to get a bigger contract. The only thing that is clear is that they will not compromise at all on money. The greed is more important than the team. My take is that at least one of Nylander and Matthews will leave or get traded. The way I see it, Nylander should definitely get traded. The team would be just plain dumba** stupid to give in to his demands. If the age old problem with this current Leaf team wasn't obvious before, it sure is obvious now.

Those selfish, lazy CLOWNS can't even skate one or steps more, they won't try to lean over and stretch in order to cut a pass, they don't even care about looking back before they make a pass and all of this while in the playoffs!!! And you really think they will be willing to put the team before their greed and accept less to be on a winning team??? And lets face it, when you make over 5 fucking millions a year, do you REALLY need to have more to be happy? Maybe its just me, but i'd gladly do like Brodeur and bergeron and some others and accept a lesser amount so that the team gets better, and to grab that cup. Even if I was Mario Lemieux level (so the best player in the league), I'd be fine with 5 millions. But its just me.
My feeling with Nylander has been that he’s going to wait for a mid season signing if he resigns. If by mid season he starts to put together what could be another 40 goal season then his 10 mil ask looks more reasonable. Really high, but reasonable especially on the open market. Actually the Leafs might want to wait too. Cuz if he doesn’t score like last year, Nylander will have to come down to earth.

If the Leafs don't resign 34 and 88 it would most likely improve the team. Currently Mathews is making 11.6 m and willy is making 6.9 m. What could the Leafs do with 18.5 million. They could get 3 or 4 good players. 2 good players is better than 1 great player. 2 seasons from now Nylander would be making 10 million and Mathews will be making 13.5 for a total of 23.5 million. To me they are not team players if they want that. They simply don't care about winning. Who knows maybe the core 4 will surprise us and all take pay cuts to win the cup. Otherwise Treliving should just let them walk.
Matthews will never win a Cup in Toronto, I guarantee it.

I want to win lots of titles but I want to be the highest paid player in the league. Take a page from Tom Brady's book. He took less pay so he could have a solid o-line to protect his "blindside" and get the good players around him to win championships. When guys like Aaron Rogers or Austin Matthews says they wanna win, I don't believe them as they just want the money. What ever happened to you wanting to play the game that you love? I get that they don't want to leave money on the table but if you want to win championships, you can't do it by sucking all the money out of the budget.

People look to their leaders and copy them. Has MLSE ever lowered prices for tickets in response to about 55 years of playoff futility? No. Then why would the workers not follow this leadership and maximize their earnings. Clearly the Leaf organization is focused on making the most money possible and so should the people who people come to see.
This all comes down to what it means to individuals to win the cup or not. I have absolutely NO idea why these kids don't sacrifice some wage to truely want to win. You can say it all you want about your dreams to win a cup, but who were the finalists last year? Florida and Vegas. Superstars with super talent don't matter if they don't care about the team. Show up, produce well, 10 million bucks a year. Conversely, how about more contract incentives, base salary, and you prove you are worth it as a team, you get really healthy bonus money, like a cut of the extra money from revenues the further you go.
Bottom line is, watch the videos Gretzky and Messier talk about losing to the New York Islanders. The Islanders were to busted up to celebrate.

Why do I keep hearing "If they give them a raise they won't be able to go out & get other guys to win?" Who else do you want? You have FOUR superstars that were point per game players last year. Tavares was once the absolute SAVIOUR of the Islanders with Gretzky called him 3rd ebst in the league after Crosby and Ovechkin. There's no ADDING to this roster to get there in the playoffs. It's figuring out how to make this EXCEPTIONAL core work.
If you were a local superstar making millions by never winning anything, you too wouldn't want to leave.

I genuinely think a decent portion of the NHL would love to win the cup but it isn’t their number on priority. We’ve seen that more and more as times get more modern. Guys just clearly are more money focused than win focused and why not? It’s really just a trophy. It’s not 20m dollars it’s a trophy. I’ll take the money too Matthews.
TML fans should be hoping both these creampuffs leave, and they get back guys with skill "and" heart.
