No! I wanted him to call one more playoff game. I’m so happy he was able to retire on his own terms. RIP Rick

  2. I read this headline when I got a push notification and immediately burst into tears. This is literally the only time that’s ever happened in my life for anyone that I didn’t know personally. That’s how big of an impact this wonderful man had on my life. The few times we crossed paths, he couldn’t have been more gracious.

His humility wouldn’t allow him to accept the title of Voice of the Sabres (he believed that was Ted Darling), but that’s what he’ll always be to me. He was the greatest play-by-play man I’ll probably ever hear. May he rest in peace.

This hits hard. Its a sad day especially for people who grew up with RJ. He made watching hockey the BEST.

I was just telling a friend of mine, the other day, that if the Sabres make the playoffs this year, I would love to hear him call one of them. It looks like that’ll never happen now.

    RIP RJ

  4. A 2 year battle with multiple organ failure… And threw it all he never stopped working, never stopped giving everything he had to this team and it’s fans. RIP to an absolute legend

My condolences Sabers fans. As a diehard Dodger fan when Vin died it felt like a family died as well. I’ll definitely salut to Rick tonight.

Spent a lot of school nights on my Walkman listening to RJ and Jim slaying it past my bedtime. Amazing memories! Really wanted him to see the boys make the playoffs again. We are so privileged to have had RJ. Most icons have to retire or pass to become a legend but RJ has been one for decades. RIP

    Oh fuck

I’m glad we got to celebrate him the way we did. Could’ve lost RJ in the booth that night he had an emergency and Rayzor had to fill in

What an absolute legend. The heart and soul of the Sabres and all of fucking Buffalo. When the team was fun and he was delivering blood chilling calls there was nothing else that made me so proud to be from Buffalo

I did not experience him calling games nearly as long as most of you. I have only been a sabres fan for a few seasons now, but I feel honored to have heard him call as many as I did. Anyone who heard one game from him knew he was an all timer. RIP RJ and thank you for everything you gave to the Sabres and to Buffalo.

I only just got into hockey a few weeks ago and have picked Sabres as my team to support. when you read something like this it’s only natural to wish that you got into the sport much sooner. I would have loved to hear him call another game.

what a legend. rest easy, RJ.

This man was an icon through several generations, made the game come to life with his words, and above all transcended what was happening on the ice. He was the reason why the Sabres were so easy to love. May his spirit rest in peace, his legend will live on forever. We love you RJ
