RIP. The best part about watching a Sabres game was hearing his voice. I just felt at peace and at home.

Please rest easy where you belong… on the top shelf where mama hides the cookies

This really hurts. Win the fucking cup.

Awful news. RIP RJ. There will never be another like you.

I’m 52, so literally spent my life listening to RJ. When I was a kid, I recorded many games on cassette tapes just so I could listen to them during the off-season. RJ WAS the Buffalo Sabres to me. I’m absolutely gutted…

  8. Unoriginal_Gangster

I just wanted them to get one more playoff series for him. This fucking sucks.

  9. mustacheofgod

Really wanted him to see this team make the playoffs one more time. RIP to an absolute legend.

  10. I don’t know where to start. Voice of my childhood. Every Sabres memory I have is intertwined with his calls. He felt like part of my family. I held out hope that he’d get to see this team contend again and drop in the booth a few times.

    Buffalo loves you, RJ. 🐐

This is fucking awful. My biggest hope from our resurgence was that RJ could announce one more game when we made the playoffs.

He was supposed to be at hockey night for the Red Wings the other day, but he canceled, and they had Rob Ray show up instead.

  12. The reason why I fell in love with hockey.. I knew he wasn’t in the best health but wasn’t expecting this. Heartbroken

The greatest Buffalo sports personality ever.

I love RJ so much. THE voice of hockey. The best there ever was and ever will be. RIP, glad the team was able to celebrate and recognize him before his passing.

About to crack a Labbatt, smoke a cigar, and rewatch as many old RJ calls as I can. Rest easy, king. We were lucky to be able to hear you call games all these years. Oh brother, we are not worthy!

Well I’m glad I don’t work on Fridays because I’m legit sad. Damn. We all knew he’d dealt with his share of health issues but 81 in this day just doesn’t seem as old, damn. Thought he had more time for sure to see us finally get there. He deserved that so damn much. Love you RJ, saying thanks for the memories is such an understatement. RIP

As someone who works at Keybank, I always cherished saying goodnight to RJ on his way out. I only said a few Thank Yous and Good Nights, but he loved it here. I hope you’re calling some absolutely electric games in heaven, Rick.

  17. One of the best games I ever attended was his banner ceremony. That arena was rocking, chanting “RJ! RJ! RJ!” and just exuded pure energy. Rick was the Buffalo Sabres. He made the tough years entertaining by just his overall enthusiasm of calling the game. There will be no one else like him. Rest peacefully. We love you, RJ.
