Kopitar is an elite 2 way center who plays the game like a center. Mathews is an elite goal scoring winger who takes faceoffs. I'd rather have the center. Frankly I think Mathews is the second best offensive player on his own team and him looking for a raise at this point is frankly stupid. If anything he was overpaid on his current deal and should be looking to give the team something back on his next deal.
You have to look at it like this. Every team in the league is very different from one another and putting in Anza Kopitar on a team like the leafs will not go over very well. You could say the same things for Auston Mathews playing in Arizona. It just doesn’t work. On top of that players don’t get paid for defense like they do for offense because people pay attention more points than they do blocks or any kind of defense in general. On top of that Kopitar isn’t even a top 15 player in the league anymore so 7 mil is justified on top of that he’s in his 30s he’s getting older two years from now that $7 million contract might not look as good. There’s a reason he’s not signed a 13 million like Austin wants it’s because at least we can guarantee Austin’s going to be good. And he’s going to do it with finesse for 10+ years. That’s why he’s asking for 13 million especially when in a couple years cap is going up there for players will be paid more and you have to take account of that if you’re signing him to an eight year deal
Wellllll Kopitar is a winner. Period. Doesn’t matter the game. Physical not physical doesn’t matter. Man’s a beast. I would take Kopitar over Matthews on any deal, any term, any number.

13.5 is steep for 35-40 goals, if he can at least break 50 frequently, maybe you could justify it
