  1. what a dumb trade
there's no REAL harm to it (except now we can only retain on two other contracts)

  2. Agreed with Jesse.

Considering Petry's age plus his contract it's a hard trade to make, so the results don't surprise me personally.

  3. I think the plan was to get rid of Hoffman and Pitlick. Having Pitt keep 25% of the salary and Montreal creates room up front and they end up with a 2nd and a 4th. Fixing Bergevin's stupid contracts will continue to be difficult.

  4. The BIG picture is the Habs finally have a creative GM that can make things happen….could Bergy have ever done any of these trades?

  5. Petry is overrated by emo fans. His only quality is to move the puck when he's on his game. When he doesn't move his feet he multiplies blunders. He refuses to defend his goalkeeper and Montreal players expressed no enthusiasm for his possible return.
The two trades together are very positive: minus 1/2 million on the cap, Nathan Légaré, Gustav Lindstrom, a 4th and a 2nd in 2025.
2025 is an excellent prospect year.

  6. Gentlemen, great narrative! The Petry trade is awesome given we are getting a younger player with NHL experience who can play immediately. We can assume that Petry will fit in well with Detroit but we can also assume that Lindstrom will provide some much needed support on the RD. :Possibly will be teamed up with either Arber or Ghule! We also get a 4th rounder out of this as well.
With respect to Paul Byron, he certainly will be missed but management should find him a position in the management ranks as he has gotten himself into the NHL through hard work and discipline despite not being drafted!
    Well done!

  7. That Lindstrom move is sooo smart. Think about it :
If you look at the depth chart it is clear as day that all the best future offensive assets of the team are already there in the NHL, some have some advance (Caufield, Suzuki, Dach) some less so yet (Newhook cause he just arrived, Slaf, Mesar etc).
But on defense, save Barron & Gühle, all your 3 potential superstars will need at least one more year of dev time before starting in the NHL, if not 2.
So what you need in the meantime if you want to build up progressively to a proper "going for the cup" level, is good enough emulators that can pave the way for those upcoming kids and prepare your group of forwards ahead of time. Looking at those emulators you have one for Mailloux in Savard, one for Hutson in some key aspects (not all, off course) in Matheson, but you do not have one for Reinbacher in Kovacevic, enters Lindstrom who will show much more similarities while not being quite there yet and certainly not at a comparable ceiling but may turn out better than expected which would be more than fine although that's not even needed.
    Kent, you're a chess grandmaster !

  8. so you think teams were offering more but hughes took less? Petry had no value, none. They rid themselves of salary, deadweight and the young players get to play. Plus hughes gets cred for doing a good job with a vet, others players in the league recognize that

  9. these fantasy traders are crazy to think there was much of any market for petry. hughes did petry a fsvour and showed players that he will try to help players go where theywant. that's goodfor free agents in the fyture

  10. Wings fan here. This trade seems decent for both teams. Gustav is a defensive minded defenseman. He doesn't have a high points ceiling but is very defensively sound. He'll def push the others for a shot on the Habs.

  11. I think it was a very good move and these are my reasons :
    1. Petry might be closer to retirement than we think – 2 years at the most
    2. Petry himself had to approve the trade with his no-trade clause so it works for Petry
    3. having some low life fans booing him every time he goes on the ice is not constructive when building a new team
    4. the player they got back is much younger and has some upside in his play – moving the puck quickly up ice
    5. the daft choice can be used in a package deal when needed
    6. Gorton & Hughes have gotten rid of most of the deadwood in the organization and replaced them with young and upcoming players
Conclusion: the Canadians will have growing pains but the future has never looked brighter in many years

  12. Habs are classy in my book. Petry must be so happy. Hometown, dad’s number. After badmouthing the habs. Gg hughes/gorton classy.

  13. This is a win imo for the habs. They most likely wanted to ship out petry and get whatever they could. They thought hey. How about we add some defensive depth along with a pick for a player that dosent want to play here? They didn't have much time at all since they probably wanted him out before training camp. Now you look at this trade. The habs got a 4th. second. Legare. Linstrom. and desmith in exchange for pitlick and hoffman. Who won this deal? this also is allowing the possibility of allen getting moved which could be similar to petrys value if the habs wanna get rid of him too. Unlikely though.

  14. it was a win from day 1 getting matheson, now getting him back with a pick, a qc prospect, a goalie wich could be another trade for more and petry getting traded again for a 24 y old d man and 4th round pick is awesome. no more hoffman taking away playtime from younger players hungry to play and pitlick wanting to leave knowing he's not given the minutes he wants. it's another win for the habs!!! another good shot by hughes!!

  15. They did it to accommodate Petry and his family. They did what was best for him and sacrificed a bit on the return. Hughes did the right thing.

  16. It makes perfect sense. Look what they got from two forwards they don’t need. A second and a fourth and a right D, Lindstrom, that looks a lot like Petry did at age 24. Great trading all totalled and class act for how Petry was traded that will attract more players to Montreal to see how well they treat players, and bonus for Petry to play where he grew up. Lindstrom looked really good when he played the games I watched, lots of potential. I am making this comment as you start your show.

  17. Well that was a waste. Petry for nothing, retaining a big chunk of his salary? And yes, it is nothing. Lindstrom couldn't even break the Wings' lineup, and a 4th-rounder has far less than a 1% chance of playing 100+ games in the NHL. For a solid top 4 D? Brutal.

  18. I hope Lord Byron can stay with the Habs for the PK and help players score on breakaways. 😄 Petry wanting to go back to the States was out in the public, and everyone knew he was going to be traded before the season. I think this limited his value, as well. All in all, I don't think anyone expected the Habs to dump Hoffman's contract AND get something back for it. Overall, a good offseason, so far.
