The story has been out there for awhile. The trade probably would have brought more immediate success, but it would have hurt the team long term.

It stings but….. LA got one finals appearance and no cups. Detroit would get two across three finals without him. Those two cups came after Bowman retooled the team to be a bit more physical and Gretzky wouldn’t have fit that system as well because the closest we had to an enforcer was Probert and Kocur. Probert’s issues with the snow makes that unviable and Kocur wasn’t on par with McSorely.
