I'm an Islanders fan but with so many teams having games in hand on this, I only have about 25-30% confidence they make into the playoffs. Furthermore I still consider Detroit with their games in hand to still be in the hunt, which is why it was nice to beat them yesterday
For those wondering:
Makar currently has 164 assists in 225 games, for an average of .729 assist per game.
He is on pace to reach 200 assists after 274 games.
Hugues, meanwhile, got 200 assists in 263 games, meaning .760 assist per game.
One big difference between the two, however, comes down to goals. Hughes has only 24, while Makar has 61. This is why Makar is at exactly one point per game right now (225 points), while Hugues is at 224 points in 263 games, or 0.85 ppg, which is still impressive given he's played on a much weaker team so far in his career.
I think Hughes is closer to the Norris discussion than you think Shannon. The last 2 seasons he's been a monster. Offensive game is clearly top 5 in the league, defensive game is ALOT better than people think, and he plays all situations and logs among the highest ice time in the league.

Know you're a VAN fan, THG, but the league is different now than when Leetch and Coffey were playing, so not sure this comparison (and record) means much of anything. Hughes setting this 'record' (if a record falls in the woods and has no real meaning, is it really a record?) getting a million X more minutes as a young player on a team that has been average to terrible for his entire time there obviously means he has a shot a lots of apples. But [admittedly w/o watching VAN games], my gut reaction is to wonder how much D he is actually playing to be racking up these assists?? Is he D because he couldn't skate well enough to be a forward back when he was in juniors and now is one of those guys who forces teammates to cover for him because he is always out of position trying to be involved in the offensive zone? Maybe he isn't, but hearing that 'record' makes me start from the assumption that he must not be a very responsible defender.
I would pay to see all the Hughes bros together on one team that would be a monstrous team imagine how good they would move the puck together
Leafs can also use Holmberg, SDA, Bobby McMann and ZAR. They are fine on forward. Man Hughes is a worldly defence man.

It’s shocking that Hughes would break the record considering how bad the Canucks have been. When Bobby Orr got his 200th assist, that was the year the Bruins won the Cup.

Paul Coffey hit 200 assists in 276 games. Hughes did it in 13 fewer games.
LOL – So I fact checked Shannon on the Paul Coffey rookie stats and yes of course he nailed it by memory. That's exactly why he IS The Hockey Guy!
Gosh , look at the names behind Quinn , Bobby Orr , Paul Coffey two of the highest scoring defencemen ever and Hughes is ahead of both of them ? How was he kept out of the limelight so long ?

The fact Hughes was able to do all this on a struggling team with a revolving door of teammates makes that record all the more impressive.

Quinn Hughes is awesome – and I say this as a Buffalo fan. Quinn is fun to watch and he has been from the word GO –> I tune in to Vancouver games for #43 and #40, they are electric.

Hughes would have broken it last year if Vancouver had a better squad over the last two years. Great start, slight sophomore slump, and as with any team that does bad as a team, or good, stats are tied to the success or lack of success of the team.
