Luckily the Oilers protected Wayne Gretzky with players who would exact revenge on anyone who abused him, so we all got to see his amazing skills for much longer. Players like Dave Semenko and Marty McSorley and Georges Laraque are a welcomed addition to hockey and allow us enjoy the skills of very talented players.

The decision to NOT call a penalty is just as important as knowing when to call one.
In this instance, the referee decided there was not enough there to call a penalty. Reasonable people can disagree on that. Early in the game that might be called to ensure ‘game control’. But it might not be called late in the game if it’s close.
This was probably not a penalty, but when you watch the Oilers live it absolutely incredible what McDavid puts up with and what the referees ignore. I saw a stat where McDavid is 57th in the league in terms of drawing penalties. How can that possibly be when we are talking about the leagues dominant player?
That said: There's been studies done by academics on how many penalties aren't called against McDavid over the last 4 years (e.g. shift by shift study). Youtube casuals don't know shit. This dude gets mugged and the league allows it to limit power play time.
The dude is just hands down faster and better than the league. It's like a fucking ringer at a bar league.
