Amazing trade for us
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 Eric Carlson has been traded in a three-team blockbuster trade involving nine players and draft picks.
01:25 Pittsburgh Penguins acquire Eric Carlson from San Jose Sharks, with the Sharks retaining $1.5 million of Carlson's salary per season for four years.
01:38 Penguins also get REM Pitlick and a 2026 third-round pick from the Montreal Canadiens.
02:06 San Jose Sharks receive Mikhail Granlund and Mike Hoffman from Montreal, along with defenseman Yan Ruda from Pittsburgh, and a 2024 first-round pick from the Penguins.
03:27 Montreal Canadiens get Jeff Petry back from Pittsburgh, with 25% salary retention, and goaltender Casey DeSmith, as well as prospect forward Nathan Lagare.
05:05 This is the second time in NHL history that the reigning Norris Trophy winner (Eric Carlson) has been traded immediately after winning the award.
06:30 The trade leaves Montreal with an excess of defensemen, potentially leading to further moves in the roster, especially in the goaltending position.

Petry will be traded Habs will have like 30 million free cap next year
Love this as a Pens fan. Habs made out like bandits. Retain 50% on Petry should get a lot.
Man, San Jose got hosed! The only real piece of value they get is, assuming the Penguins make the playoffs, a bottom 16 1st round pick.
Also makes me wonder if the Sharks would be interested in adding a piece now that they have some cap space open up.
Petry to Washington 50% retained for Ryan Leonard please
Greer W
Let's bring some more cups to Pittsburgh!!!!
Hoffman finally out!
Petry won’t stay long; GM is probably trying to move him already
😂😂😂 you guys are so screwed now we have Erik Karlsson he wants a cup we will give them one see you all next season
Yea baby yea
We Are the Champions no time for losers
Penguins forever
As a Habs fan, we were winners! Pitlick is a decent player but was waiver bound. Hoffman we were ready to give him away, even retain salary, and to get surprisingly good return for him is a bonus. Receiving the 2nd rounder is an excellent return. The minor leaguer Legare is a native Montrealer and will fit in with Laval (our AHL team). Weird getting Jeff Petry back, but you can be sure Kent Hughes is working on a deal to move him. The goalie DeSmith is actually a plus for the Habs. He is an above average backup and strengthens us.
Sharks did not receive enough in return for a top nhl player meeting and exceeding his contract.
Penguins and Montreal won the trade. Sharks lost the trade. Pens and Montreal traded underperforming players and San Jose did not receive any top prospects that were nhl ready.
I watched the penguins last year lose msny games due to poor defensive play. I do not think Karlsson will help the team much except on the power play and top line scoring.
Montreal also gets a second round pick from the pens
As a caps fan….Great………Just Great!!!
Guess I'm missing something but I'm not a fan of trading for a D Man who is going to make roughly $10 million for the next 4 years at that age. If it works out, then good on Dubas
Penguins getting a defensive Martin Havlat. Always always injured hahaha
Thanks Sharks for trading for EK in the first place
