Today in the NHL off-season, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has pushed in his available chips, acquiring star defenceman Erik Karlsson from San Jose in a massive three-way deal with the Sharks and Montreal Canadiens on Sunday. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang — are all in for one last shot at the Stanley Cup. We break down the trade, & how in theory, it could make the Penguins a super team.

Theory will only take you so far – Oppenheimer/Kyle Dubas
Erik Karlson might be the most overpaid player in the NHL, he is and always has been a minus player. Yea he puts up numbers on the front end but he botches way too many plays on the back end to be a top tier player.
Toronto's core 4 really were never proven tho
Bet they still miss the playoffs 😂
A little more proven? The penguins core is ten times what the leafs have lol
Trouba one of dirtiest players in hockey he'll just take a player out when things not going typical rangers fan making a comment what have they done lately oh I know NOTHING
makes them better yes, but doesn't make them a juggernaut
He’s not play defensive defender niether is leatang
Take this to the bank….pens will not make the playoffs again!
Welcome to Pittsburgh Karlsson
Three aging veterans, no matter how skilled, are going to win you a cup.
It should be fun to watch if nothing else
Pens are now a 1st playoff team like the last several years.
Pens fan since 86, will this work??? Who knows, but I am glad to see them try something rather than just diluting the team down to nothing so it looks like you have done something (ahem, Ron).
As a Pens fan I'm extremely excited for the upcoming season, I'm also however extremely nervous. I think even if we can make it work and the team plays well, we are going to have to be very wary of injuries. All of the core four are old and have a history of injuries…
Odds he gets hurt?
I'm not sure of the details, and what Pittsburgh gave up in the trade. But assuming it is primarily future assets (young players and draft picks), then I don't see a downside.
Any team with Karlsson has a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup than that same team would otherwise have without him. And it makes perfect sense for Pittsburgh to trade future assets for a better chance to win it all now. Crosby and Malkin aren't getting any younger, so if they are going to win one more championship with this core team, then they had better do it soon.
It makes them better. They got rid of granlund and petry and added Ryan graves. I am concerned about the 3rd pairing on defense.
Worse
Until all three them get hurt. All of those players are getting into their twilight years for sure!
Penguins are getting old. You really think Karlsson is going to put up 100 points with the Penguins next year?
