It is pretty much a question of is 3 really good seasons and 2 god awful seasons from Skinner worth the contract? Therefore, I’d have to say Carolina won

  2. crowned_one_

Wow I read receivers and was like when did that become a position in the NHL.

  3. OilersPhanatic77

Carolina makes the playoffs every year and Buffalo doesn’t.

  4. BronzeBackWanderer

We did. Kochetkov is going to be a star. I can feel it.

  5. reginaldturtle1111

Carolina by far. Skinner is super average

  6. Skudzonen

To me it’s Carolina per 2023. And not just because they got rid of a contract that wasn’t working for them. Kochetkov might very well be the future goalie of the franchise for many years and Nikishin took a big step forward this past season to hint at a possible future impact in the club.

With that said it also seems Buffalo is on to something very interesting in the coming season and Skinner could be a very important piece to that puzzle. In that case both teams are certainly winners per 2024.

  7. sic_transit_gloria

In 2023, I’ll take the guy that put up 35 goals and 47 assists last year over a goalie that may or may not pan out and 3 guys I’ve never heard of, thank you very much.

  8. Carolina. Though it’s less ugly now than a few years back….

  9. dr_van_nostren

Canes cuz they didn’t have to pay Skinner. They’re no worse for wear and don’t have that contract on the books.

  10. balla4sho1447

Guy stitches letters on jerseys in Carolina definitely lost

  11. Everyone commenting against Skinner clearly doesn’t know what’s been happening with him in Buffalo. His contract actually kept us over the league minimum for awhile there and he’s one of the most loveable guys on the team and in the community. He also just had a personal best season in points and is a top line winger with over a decade of experience on a very young team that needs someone like him. We love Jeff Skinner.

  12. Slapshot683

Did someone have a stroke when they typed those draft picks?

  13. TwoForHawat

There was no winner or loser. Both teams got what they wanted out of this trade.

Skinner didn’t dramatically overperform or underperform expectations on the whole. Carolina doesn’t really miss him, Buffalo isn’t remotely upset to have him. That’s a wash.

The return for Carolina was a player with low expectations and three future mid to late round draft picks. Carolina used those picks, and seems like they used them pretty damn effectively, but that doesn’t really swing the trade in their favor. Buffalo doesn’t suddenly lose a trade just because the player that got drafted 84th overall two full years after the trade happened turned out to be a pretty decent prospect.

Both teams got a fair return. Carolina managed to not waste their picks. Good deal for both sides.

  14. Carolina, cliff pu is an oshawa generals legend

    # gensnation!

  15. Sabres fans including those on the r/Sabres would have you believe it is a landslide win for the Sabres.

Anyone who has ever had a rational thought would know that skinner fleeced us 100 percent.

The contract and the player will not be a favorable one in coming years because we have to sign players like Dahlin, Power, Levi, and Quinn (to name a few)

  16. Kushykush_

Hope skinner does well I liked watching him in the ohl

  17. OutlawCountryFan

What happened to Cliff Pu? Did he end up getting a job in a wastewater treatment plant?

  18. Wide_right_

what people are forgetting is not that Jeff Skinner was the victim of notorious hockey terrorist Ralph Krueger, but that he is an absolute vibes king now that the locker room seems healthy and he clearly enjoys being here now. for this organization, that means a lot and goes a long way. but Kochetkov really might pan out for Carolina and I can let them enjoy that

  19. Strypes4686

Buffalo. Skinner has put up 30+ the past two seasons. Pu and Nikishin are depth players in the KHL and have never seen NHL play. Aksiantsiuk is in the Stars system and was never actually Carolina’s because the pick was sent to Florida for Reimer and Kochetkov HAS donned the Canes sweater. He’s a goalie and a third stringer at the moment.

  20. Swingersorbust

Carolina. Strong team made it to the conference finals and didn’t have to pay Skinner $9 million to miss the playoffs again.

  21. Right now, Buffalo, but in 3 years, it’ll probably be Carolina

  22. smile_and_wav3

Skinner certainly did not win this trade lol. I mean… the guy has to live in Buffalo for goodness sake

  23. Pythnator

Jeff Skinner having the best goal songs overrides anything.

  24. El_Kabongg

It’s skinner but it’d be even more so skinned had he not gotten inexplicably benched for 2 years because of an idiot coach.

  25. RobbyMac21

The Canes, strictly because Cliff Pu had among the most legendary goal cellys of all time.

  26. Burnt2Smithereens

Skinner had a very good year last year but for the first 3 years of that contract he was absolutely not worth 9mil. Buffalo has him for another 4 seasons. Can he score 35 goals consistently? He’s lucky to have Thompson on his line.

Kochetkov will likely take over for Andersen very soon and could be the future goalie for them.

  27. itisntreallythateasy

While you can’t really say they won the trade because of picks (it’s on the team to make the picks count), I’m surprised no one’s talking about Nikishin for Carolina. He’s huge and put up 55 points in 65 games as a 20 year old defender. Nothing to shrug at in Canadian leagues, but that’s a huge surprise in the KHL since they don’t typically give big minutes to young players. Seems like the real deal

  28. TwoWay_Hockey4979

    Apparently Russia did, holy Jesus.

  29. hockeynoticehockey

The lady who sews the letters on Carolina’s sweater. Must have taken weeks to finish.
