You see, back in the late 90s/ early 00s, it was a lot harder to get custom made jerseys for your beer league teams. So your options were usually…
1) Use a blank that was essentially a NHL teams jersey style just with no crest or shoulder patches
2) Find some jerseys for some obscure European or Russian team and buy some up in bulk (they were usually pretty cheap since not many people in North America were fans of those teams) and use those.
It wouldn’t surprise me that your Dad’s team essentially went option 2 with those Russian jerseys, as I could see his team wearing those if we were all wearing the Russian Penguins back then

However, I wore a CSKA Penguins replica to a drop in a while ago and the reception was less than kind. Wouldn’t recommend in 2023 if you’re just trying to have a good time playing some puck.

I’ve got a ton of Russian jerseys from all kinds of leagues. They are pretty awesome imo. I wish the nhl would switch to dye sublimated jerseys like the ones Lutch makes. We could then have some pretty rad designs instead of the same old “look what adidas did” adds another twill solid color stripe or some other boring shit.
