The top of Edmonton's forward lineup is great, but in terms of roster, the Avs mostly beat them with forward depth which hasn't improved a ton. So I disagree a little with you.
By seeing what Vinnie has brought so far we don’t need another offensive defenceman. We need real defence. All star week too boring for me. We are spoiled with the stars this team ices every game. Keep the vids rolling.
I would have said yes on Chychrun 6 months ago. But now I wouldn't pull the trigger on him now that Broberg is improving. Besides, it's impossible to trade for him if Holloway, Broberg, and possible Borgeault are untouchable. I'm okay with the D for now and go after a bottom 6 forward that can win faceoffs like Toews.
If the Oilers trade for Chychrun but end up removing the "seaweed ability" and "reach" of Desharnais from the lineup when they get Chychrun, then I think that the Oilers will have solved nothing, IMO.
I really think that the road through Colorado requires physicality. To me, on defense, I get Nemailainen up to speed. Look up the video of him laying out Dustin Brown last year…literally launches him into the air. When you watch Colorado, their transition game and the McKinnon end to end rushes are what win games for them. Until the day that our defence (particularly Ceci and Nurse) learn to stop backing up into our zone, we need to focus on acquisition or promotion of players who understand the heavy physical game. After all, other teams do this to Connor and Leon all the time (watch highlights from LA and Colorado last year). Nemailainen is that kind of player. I think having both Desharnais AND Nemo pencilled in on defence would be a lot for other teams to handle. And running an 11-7 setup affords that luxury since Desharanais can slot in as a regular D man (and not the 7th man) when we try to run both of these guys in the line up together in the same game.
Secondly, I would heavily focus on Ivan Barbashev. The guy can score, and he hits like a freight train, and his highlight reel seems to show that he really likes to paste Colorado players.
In a perfect world, we develop Nemo, bring in Barbashev, and acquire Luke Schenn maybe as insurance on the Nemo idea. This does not break the bank in any way whatsoever and arguably makes us much tougher to play against. If we only had a player whose last name begins with G, then we could put Kostin, Barbashev, and that person a line and call it the "KGB" line. I digress….

Trade Nurse & 2nd round pick for Chychrun! That way we get rid of a terrible contract and a D’man who doesn’t give 100%, except when he feels like it.
