At the time of this comment, he's 160 goals away from tieing 99. Thats 4, 40 goal seasons. Or 5 32 goal seasons. In 5 seasons he'll be 41. He very realistically may break the reccord and be at the top for decades and beyond
He’s basically unstoppable
Seeing NHL players admire one of the greats is awesome to watch… especially loved the line that “his off years are anybody’s best year.” We Caps fans have been really spoiled by his greatness. So much so that when he doesn’t get 50 some years, I get kind of pissed, becuase I want him to get, at least, 50 every single year.
I remember first watching him in that electric post lockout era and thinking it was like someone took the best abilities from Brett hull, Pavel bure and Eric lindros and combined them into one player. Ovi is and has always been the real life version of the maxed out create-a-player in an NHL video game

when Ovi came into the league he instantly became my favorite player. He had a deadly shot and would still play physical. I loved everything about his game and his passion. One of my all time top players. I wasn't around to watch Howe or the old greats but I have loved watching the career of Ovi

Ovi and Bäckström are the last 2 of my childhood sport heroes, all the rest are long retired.
It’s just surreal that all these years later I’m still able to watch those 2 not just compete, but to perform at a top tier level.

12 in his first 14 games so far this season. If he gets 50 this season it takes him to 780. He will then need 28.5 goals per season over the last 4 years of his contract to tie Gretzky at 894 goals.
When I tell my grandkids about him, they’ll think I was overselling when I probably didn’t give his greatness justice. He’s done things we’ve never seen and won’t ever see again
