Pro Scout with the Penguins for over a decade, interesting background. Looks like they poached him from Vancouver, seems a bit odd to make a lateral move after only a single season with the Canucks.

edit: ah he was a scout with the Flames 2 years ago, so Treliving had worked with him before.

[Here’s an Athletic article from last year about him](https://theathletic.com/3066831/2022/01/13/one-on-one-with-new-canucks-agm-derek-clancey-we-are-going-to-start-changing-how-we-do-things/)

    Some quotes:

    > In-house in Pittsburgh we took pride in finding pieces that maybe didn’t fit somewhere else, and that came in and fit with our group. The Justin Schultzs and guys like that.

    > …

    > That’s something in ~~Vancouver~~ **Toronto** we’re going to strive to improve on. It’s a collaborative effort, right down to the development, the American League, our draft picks. It all has to work together if we’re going to cross the finish line. It isn’t easy, it’s a big group, we all need to work in the same way. In Pittsburgh, that’s how it worked, and it’s the people first — getting the right people — and then it’s executing the plan.

    > …

    > **(I’ve been told that you’re old school and that your work ethic is through the roof. Is that fair? How would you describe yourself as a talent evaluator?)** You’re getting paid to do a job. I’d never want my employer to think he was overpaying me. That’s just how I’m wired. That’s just the Newfoundland in me. You work hard and good things happen.

    > …

    > **(You bring up analytics. How much do you weigh them in your process?)** Personally, I’m not a big analytics person. I look at a few things, but I don’t use it in its entirety. I look at a few key factors when I’m looking at a player. I use that, compare it to how I think of a player and see if it correlates. The biggest fear is that I’m here and the analytics are in a totally different place, and you have to ask yourself: Why is it so different? That’s when you try to get to the middle, maybe I’m not seeing something, or maybe the analytics aren’t analyzing something. So you have to dive into it, and see why there’s a big difference. I think all the information is good. Everyone uses it differently. Some staff members might use it more than I use it. But at the end of the day, it’s just about using all the information available to you. Maybe that’s a generic answer, but that’s the bottom line.

Interesting hire. I wonder what this means for Pridham/Wes Clark, if anything at all. My guess is Toronto and Treliving are preparing for one of those two, or both, to go to Pittsburgh with Dubas.

Leafs won’t stop until they have more AGMs than the rest of the Atlantic Division combined

Well I mean it’s going to take a fighting Newfoundlander to come in and organize everything correctly. It’s about time that Canadians realize that Newfoundland is the Capital Province of Canada. Go Newfs Go!!!

I find it encouraging that we need commas to distinguish all our assistant gms. Good utilization of that MLSE money.
