Media will stir shit anyway they can – it's quite unprofessional, imho. I think Marner could have phrased things differently but I don't think he threw anyone under the bus – it is a team game and everyone has a role to play regardless of their salary. He is staying out of the compensation discussion about Nylander and Matthews, nothing more, nothing less – he probably could have been clearer by saying "they are my buddies, their contracts are none of my business.
Elephant in the room. Mathews overpaid by 3 million a year, Tavares overpaid by 3 million a year, Marner overpaid by 1.5 million a year. Nylander under paid by about 1 million a year. In this crazy whacked out flat cap world, Nylander gets traded and Mathews somehow gets a raise when he is overpaid already. Clearly winning isn't important in Toronto, they just want to put bums in seats and make a ton of money. So called stars, that are way over paid seems to fit the bill for teams like Edmonton and Toronto cuz these players put bums in seats. Pretty clear what the focus is when you over pay your so called stars like they do. Toronto's super spending habits are coming home to roost this year as they can't afford to extend these guys right now. Last kick at the cat this year for Toronto and it's all down hill from here.
get rid of Marner, Auston and JT and keep Nylander

Your analysis of Marner and the other two is excellent ! I believe you are right and that is why the Leafs have not achieved anything of significance in the play offs . Trade both Nylander & Marner and keep Matthews . I'm serious. Dubas has to take a large part of the blame for creating this " culture " . It takes guts to say what you've said , so I congratulate you. I'm a die hard Leafs fan and am old enough to have watched the Leafs of the 60s. There are no Keons, Pulfords, Hortons , Armstrongs , Kellys …… on this team .

You can put marner on any line and he will get the line scoring. he has done it. Mathews cannot do that. cool dude but not worth more than Marner imo. love seeing these two playing together when they are on same line.

The Matthews and Nylander negotiations are linked. It makes no sense to negotiate individually. The Matthews and Nylander Camps need to be brought together into the negotiaons. Treliving should throw a dollar amount in front of them (21-Million?)and then tell them to divide it.
Even before the comments, I always felt that Marner should be one to go, they're just too top heavy up front and looking for bargain deals in goal and on the backend. Beside Marner, I think Mathews may get the biggest return, however him being generational talent isnt a trade a GM wants on their resume. Personal ill sign Nylander and Mathews, cause Nylander stock $10m maybe a value deal if term is right. As for Marner, I think he's going to demand $13.5m til in midst in his prime. Leafs need a top 2 defense from $6-8m, then rest can hopefully lockup Samonov longer term.
