Ottawa Senators Can Draft 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Overall @ 2020 NHL Entry Draft? Nope, Cannot (NHL News)

I had a few people asking me to make a video about the New York Islanders and the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and whether or not they can draft 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall with the three first rounders that they possess. Aside from their own, they also own the San Jose Sharks’ and New York Islanders’ firsts. Well, that NYI first round pick is actually top 3 protected, meaning that if that Islanders pick—somehow—ends up being a top 3 pick via the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery, it will not go to the Senators, and instead will be returned to the Islanders. The Senators then will receive the 2021 Islanders first round pick instead. So, if they can’t draft 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, what’s the best the Sens can do?

  1. Havent even watched the video yet, but i did the math as soon as they annouced the Playoff format. The best the sens pick is 1, 2 and 10. But in order for that to happen: Montreal, Florida, New York Rangers, Columbus, Chicago AND Arizona all need to win their series' , and the Islanders need to lose theirs. In that and ONLY that scenario the Islanders would have the 10th best odds at the 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall Pick and theirs no lottery for 4th-9th unless you're already placed there. The pick is Top 3 protected so by some miracle the Islanders win the draft lottery and pick top 3 the Pageau 1st becomes an Unconditional 2021 1st rounder. The WORST ottawa picks this year is 5th, 6th and 31st, but in a draft this deep as a Sens fan i still wouldn't be very upset with that. And considering when you pool the San Jose odds and the Sens odds, we do have the best shot at 1st overall sooooo… GO SENS GO

  2. We can't draft 3rd. The NYI pick is top 3 protected. We could however pick 1st,2nd and 4th overall

  3. The other bottom 8 picks are still lottery picks. It would happen they get the first second and 4th overall pick.

  4. Yep it would be amazing for ottawa for the next 3 years. They would find a way to stunt their growth. And as long as hes the owner of the team he will not pay them to keep them. Every superstar has left the team. And i mean every superstar. Wether its because the team sucks and they get frustrated and want out. Or the owner is too cheap to pay them to keep them.. But maybe this is the change they needed to bring excitment to the city. And before you call me a hater.. I lived 17 years in ottawa i lived thru the hardship and the excitement. Only 2 players i know of stayed their entire career chris phillips and alfredsson. Redden stayed 14 years. But they played during the era of lesser salary cap problems. Nowadays rookies make 925k with ability to make 3.2mil in bonuses or so. I have trouble believing ownership will be excited to not just pay 1 but 3 superstars 9mil out of his pocket every year.. But we shall see exciting times in ottawa forsure im jealous as a hab fan. The sens have done the rebuild right. While my habs have continued to flunder in mediocrity for years to come

  5. Since we're talking about the Sens and the pick they get from the Islanders… i want to give a topic to discuss… And is a big reason I want the Vancouver Canucks pick this year… Obviously if we have our pick we lost to the Wild… so most likely we're around 14th… Some scenarios… what if Askarov is still available… would Ottawa step up and offer a second with the Islanders pick Ottawaobtained… which could become around 16th… worse if Islanders go on a run… or draft the goalie, maybe Sanderson, Rossi or Lundell… good picks… who could be available with the Islanders pick… Jarvis would be a screaming nightmare on the Canucks…. wanting to hold our next year's draft is ludicrous if we're already close to top 10 … deep draft, a year of development, and a bright prospect for the future… if you trade down with Ottawa and get a second… 2 prospects to look forward to… any of these prospects I'd love in the fold… why I'd draft Askarov… obviously his ceiling, but you can always make decisions about the goalies… neways food for thought

  6. Sens suck. They should trade lefreneire to habs.

Oh, and the habs aren’t beating the pens. Too bad Ottawa.

And hopefully the playoffs are cancelled and the habs have the 8 th pick heading in to the normal lottery.

  7. I lasted about 2:30 into the video just to hear how long it would take you to say “no, the NYI pick is too 3 protected”. It’s ok. The possibility of 1-2-13 is good enough for me.

  8. NYI pick is top 3 protected and if anything, the new playoff play in format screws Ottawa as far NYI pick is concerned as NYI were FOR SURE looking like they would miss the playoffs before the season stoppage. There was a chance it could have been as high as 4th overall then. Now other than teams that win top 3 lottery, everything else is in reverse points based order seating. 11th is the best they can get and a good chance at that unless they got their act together after 3 months off cuz Florida was playing better, Carolina, CBJ…all we’re playing better hockey.

But even at 11th or 12th or 13th overall as they are sure to get (Islanders aren’t going anywhere and were saved by Corona) you will have an excellent chance to pick up an elite prospect in a deep draft like this. Maybe even 1 of the elite 8 drops or Lundell or Askarov outside of the elite 8. Then you still have your pickings between bluechip property’s like Quin or Sanders BEYOND the top 10….this draft is mad deep and some excellent prospects could be had in the late teens to 20 who have lottery level talent.

  9. Lets just say if Ottawa were to get picks #3 and #5, and the Wings got #1..If the Sens were enamored enough with Alexis to offer 3 and 5 to the Wings for #1 , would Stevie Y do it.and pass up the best player in the draft.

  10. *Conditions on 1st round pick: If the NYI win the draft lottery and select top 3, the pick becomes a 2021 1st round pick. Therefore impossible to draft 1st, 2nd and 3rd Overall

  11. If Ottawa gets first and second it'll be like when we Canucks got Hank and Danny except instead of the 3rd pick it would be the 1st and it would be Quinton Byfield and Alexis Lafreniere… Probably

  12. why would you say in the title they can go 1 2 and 3 and then say they cant??? thats really dumb, maybe try and make the titles accurate to the video
