  1. As a Wings fan, this is when Crosby became my most hated player. First, he beat my Wings in 2009 to win the Stanley Cup then he beat my home country with the OT winner to win Olympic Gold the very next year.

  2. How about Jason of The Ottawa Senators breaking in on Cary Price and roofing the puck.

  3. I was working at Costco in the electronics department, had all the tv's on the game tons of members were all watching – it was pretty cool!

  4. When it comes to the greatest goal of all time I suppose it all depends upon what generation you belong to. I would submit that while Sid's goal was a masterful moment in hockey history, the greatest goal of all time belongs to Paul Henderson and Team Canada which was scored in the final minute of the final game of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and Russia. Unquestionably the finest hockey series ever played. The incredibly talented Russians shocked Canada, and the world, early in the series but after eight games Canada had redeemed itself with a remarkable comeback. With all due respect to Sidney Crosby and his teammates, I'll take Paul Henderson's series winner every time.

  5. Im an Aussie that grew up not knowing what ice hockey was. I started following team Canada that year when I caught their first round game randomly, after watching this gold medal game, I’ve been a die hard hockey fan ever since. Best sport in the world !

  6. I was an Ovi fan for the first few years, I think this goal made me jump ships and I've been worshipping 87 ever since

  7. In an alternate universe Miller had his stick down and Luongo let one go in high glove side Maple Leafs style

  8. I remember this like it was yesterday watching it from my seat in the rink it was an experience I’ll never forget.

  9. This felt very much like a SB nation rewind video, not that that's a bad thing, I loved it

  10. watching this vid gave me chills. i was 7 and remember enjoying the mario and sonic olympic games and wasn’t much of a fan of hockey but ik how high the stakes were. looking back, international hockey needs to return to this. super teams facing off in gold medal games

  11. I don’t know if they televised this part but in the intermission between the 3rd and OT they had mike Babcock on the big screen interviewing him. All I remember from that interview is Babs saying this is all part of the plan we just wanted to make it interesting for the fans. Let me tell you that fired up the crowd!

  12. I think the fact that you state that this is the most iconic goal in "hockey history" reflects your age. Yes, from 2010 to present it is likely the most important goal in hockey history. However, older people, or those with a sense of history would look at various Stanley Cup or series-winning goals with Bobby Orr's leaping goal against St Louis in 1968, Stephane Matteau's goal for the Rangers against New Jersey in the 1994 semifinals, Guy Lafleur's tying goal against the Boston Bruins in 1979, Bobby Nystrom's Cup winner against Philadelphia in 1980 etc. Or internationally, Mike Eruzione's goal for Team USA against the USSR in 1980, Bobby Hull's going for Team USA against Canada in 1996, Mario Lemieux's goal in 1987 (though not technically a "golden goal"), and most famously, Paul Henderson scoring "for Canada" in 1972.

On the positive side the review of the intricacies of this "golden goal" against the US in 2010 on home soil was well done, including the background to the goal highlighting the fact that Canada had held a 2-0 lead, and given up the tying goal very late in this game was impressive. It also serves to note just what a smart strong player Crosby was and is. It is truly unfortunate that concussions robbed us of peak Crosby–I recently saw a video outlining this. Crosby was able to do just about everything, including leading a team when it matters most.

  13. It's interesting that the ref changing the timing of the play by a fraction of a second is probably what lead to the goal rather than a normal cycle that just goes nowhere. Not a conspiracy theory, It's just interesting that "that's the way she goes". Shout-out Ray.

  14. Got to watch this with my Dad and family , sadly dad pasted away later in the year but was able to spend this day with him and see how happy he was !! I will hold this memory close still gives me goose bumps when i here "The Golden Goal". Thanks for making this @Hockey Psychology brought me back to a good moment in my life.

  15. And Crosby had the presence of mind to lift his stick when Rafalski was trying his last stick check. If that stick is on the puck, it might have been knocked awry.

  16. As a sports fan this was the best moment for Canada and the Olympics. To have Sidney Crosby score the winner was priceless. The kid at the time was calm and cool boom

  17. Greatest Goal in Millennial history, maybe. Henderson's Goal against the Russians, Gretzky to Lemieux in the Canada Cup, even Bobby Orr's Swan Dive…all far more iconic and world shaking.
