  1. 14 mill alot of money for a player who is soft in the playoffs. Him and Marner are 2 of the best players in the league who are extremely overpaid for their results

  2. Matthews didn't sign his 11.6 deal in a flat cap era. The cap was strongly increasing year after year when he signed his deal…. then the pandemic hit and killed the cap.

  3. The more money you want the less chance of you winning, if thats the case then why play hockey if you dont care for winning

  4. 5yrs. extension would be absolutely fantastic. NO EXTRA MONEY. He has already been overpaid for the last 5 years with no bridge deal. Pastrnak, Makinnon won a cup on bridge deals. I believe had Mathews, Marner and Nylander signed bridge deals we would have been able to add enough depth to win. We could not keep Hyman, Naz or others. Traded away picks to fill holes. We have different faces now but still weak on D and goalie. Already well over the cap and no money for Samsonov. To me we would not be over the cap unless someone is not extending and will be traded opening cap space. My guess it is Nylander with Domi and Bertuzzi his replacement. It would allow for signing Samsonov to 3 to 5yrs at 3.5 to 4 mil. You run Murray until he breaks down again and send the kid to the minors to get a full workload. Murray to LTIR opening cap space to pick up playoff pieces. Regular season does not matter.

  5. this click bait is a red herring. if he re-signs 3-5 it will be at a lower hit than a max term deal. helps buds now and allows him to sign for max term when the cap raises have normalized. kind of a non-story.

  6. Toronto will never win with Matthews He’s a “me, myself and I “ kind of player. Toronto are always gonna caped with matthews. Which never leaves room to sign other good players. Next thing you know, leaf’s nation are gonna wake up one morning, matthews is retired and still waiting for a Stanley cup.

  7. When I retired from the military, I could have taken a job as a contractor and made boatliads on top of my great pension. I chose happiness, and I stay retired. Maybe AM34 is incapable of happiness, so he fills that with money? I, for one, can't understand it.

  8. Elliot freedman isn’t the most trusted source bob mckenzie is the top dawg

  9. he could do like MacK and just get 0.1M more than the best paid player, still be the better paid in the league while leaving some room to Toronto to add good pieces and maybe have a chance to win a cup. it would give him 12.7M

  10. If I was matthews and could command his type of money I would go for 3-5 years.

First off he didn't sign a massive contract during a flat cap Era. He signed a big contract right before the cap went flat, which no one predicted.

I have a feeling it will be 3 years deal but it's going to be discounted. He's already been rumored to be willing to leave money on the table. If he is leaving money on the table this next contract it's not going to be long term. He will do three years, that will be the bare minimum to keep the public off his back, the cap will have gone up and MOST importantly John tavares will have a new deal. He will stay a leaf thebrest of his career , but he's not making 11 million a season next contract. If trieliving can get tavares In around 5-7 million per year it has the potential to open an extra y million per year to play with.

  11. Three years actually ain't a bad deal for the Leafs. If they could compromise and make it 4 that'll be better. If they don't win in the next 3-4 years with this group, they're never winning with this group. If they sign an 8 year deal, they're stuck with the last 4 years of Matthews's contract while they're probably going into rebuild mode. Then they're like San Jose with Karlsson's contract, a boat anchor pay off that they can't trade with a mediocre team. So I'll go with the contrarian side on this and say that a 3-4 year deal is a good deal for the Leafs and then let Matthews get his $15M somewhere else.

  12. 3 years, 5 years, 8 years, 25 years, doesn't matter. They still ain't winning a cup; with him or without him. If he was smart, he'd head south for less pressure and far better opportunities.

  13. Moronic fans that say trade Mathews are just that M0r0ns . Who trades their # 1 Draft pick? The Leafs have had a history of “Inept” management going back multiple decades and the Dubas era is no different. They tried to sign Stamkos, likely for jersey sales. They signed Tavares who they didn’t need because at the time they were the 3rd highest scoring team in the NHL with Mathews and Kadri as 1&2. So Dumas signs Tavares, then in quick order Mathews and Marner. Then Nylander sitting on his ass at home gets a deal with minutes to spare Nov. 30 2018. The “First” year of that contract Nylander was paid $10 Mill. For that amount he scored 7 goals. That contract made it impossible for the Leafs to get a Simmons type player at the 2019 Deadline. Again “Inept” Leafs management. Just hope that those days are over as long as Tree has the ability to keep Shanahan out of the kitchen.

  14. I wouldn't fucking give Toronto a discount either. And I'm from Toronto fans are so fucking abusive. I would want extra too Especially for the abuse that I would have to put up with. This is a business he did not come to Toronto to kiss ass. And if he signs 5 years, hes already did. How many years in Toronto? So by the time hes done, hes done 15 years in total. That's a fucking lifetime, what more do you want from the guy his underwear?

  15. Who cares. I mean like tell me about the deal after it’s done, really I’m not even that interested in that, I just want to watch them play. All this fanboying is honestly sickening.

  16. The smart thing to do would be trade him right now and get an insane haul but it would hurt Marner and Keefe’s feelings so they won’t.

  17. Eventually, the NHL is going to do what the NBA did and cap contracts at 5 years and make it so that only a player’s current team can offer the most AAV. The league is (generally) healthier when markets that havent sniffed a Stanley Cup (i.e. Toronto) can retain its home grown talent. Auston Matthews is the NHL’s version of Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard.

  18. The only way in hell I will ever be okay with a number over 13 is if it's for eight years. If this guy really wants 13+ and on a shorter deal, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, please fuck off and go play somewhere else. I'm sick of watching other teams get the full eight-year buy in from their franchise players at discount numbers while watching the Leafs get robbed left right and center of every penny they own. Enough. Sign long term, sign at a discount, I'm good with either – but if he seriously tries to pull something like 3×14 I hope everyone in SBA boos him off the ice.
