DeBRINCAT TO DETROIT RED WINGS – YZERMAN TRADES w/ OTTAWA – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 9th, 2023

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS: ALEX DeBRINCAT HAS BEEN TRADED TO THE DETROIT RED WINGS! In a podcast first, nearly an hour of recording had happened before Steve Yzerman made the blockbuster deal to acquire Ottawa Senators scorer Alex DeBrincat in exchange for Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 1st round pick (Detroit’s or Boston’s), and a 4th round pick.

Tune in as we begin (a much more exciting) round 2 of tonight’s episode by discussing all theings Alex DeBrincat, starting off with our initial reactions to Hockeytown’s newest scorer (4:50).

Next, we discuss the value of Steve Yzerman’s trade with Pierre Dorion, who won the deal, whether this is another case of The Yzerplan fleecing another team, how Kubalik and DeBrincat compare in terms of goal-scoring, the conditions on the 1st round pick, & more (8:00).

After that, we analyze the 4 year, $7.875 million AAV extension that Alex DeBrincat signed with Detroit once the trade happened: was this good value? Why 4 years rather than 8 years? How did Yzerman get DeBrincat to sign so much lower than anticipated? All of that, the DeBrincat salary structure with clauses, & plenty more (21:30).

After discussing Detroit’s remaining trade assets & how it affects the Yzerplan’s outlook (29:55), we then take a look at where Alex DeBrincat fits into the Detroit Red Wings lineup, line combinations, how this deal will affect Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, & other Red Wings stars, how DeBrincat slots into the power play, expectations & goal totals for the Cat’s first season, & more (34:40).

Finally, does bringing in Alex DeBrincat make the Detroit Red Wings a playoff contender? We answer that question, thoughts of “relief” on the Yzerplan, & more (49:20) before we take your questions during Overtime (57:45) – enjoy!

  1. Glad this was uploaded right before i went to bed guys. Thanks for keeping me up for another hour. Scratch that, Thanks Brad…

  2. I thought 8yrs 9 mil…but no not gonna happen with Stevie the genius. Great contract and trade

  3. I am super pleased with Yzerman because quite frankly this is the best case scenario for Detroit! Great timing for you all as well!

  4. Was waiting all night for this!!
Curious what number he's gonna wear, 12 aint available here.

  5. Congrats on the Woodward interview Ryan btw. Well deserved exposure. You guys all do a great job. Best wings podcast = WWP.
    LGRW!

  6. guy in the white constantly looks like hes going thru a bad shrooms trip. just looks uncomfortable sitting there.

  7. I remember Debrincat punching Seider in the face during those two games when Ottawa wrecked Detroit at the deadline and Seider smiling 😂Funny they're together now, great trade, excited to see this team take the ice next season!

  8. Looked into Sprong and Kostin and they are huge upgrades to our lineup. Size, toughness, speed, and skill. Teams need identity, goals and stats are important, but depth, chemistry, and style of play is more important than star players. Edmonton and avalanche vs kraken and Vegas.

  9. I could see Raymond moving to the second line. It would spread the scoring a bit and let Raymond face lower competition to maybe improve his growth. May also work well to have a guy good in the corners to dig out pucks on the 1st line. We'll see how it pans out though.

  10. The section where they were talking about Debrincat's down year last year, also should take into account this would have been a year where he had to play significantly further away from his family leaving his wife and a 2month old at home. I have to imagine that took a toll on him personally and may have contributed to his down year.

  11. Dude…. I can't wait to see larkin and debrincat as a duo. Holy sh*t. I say 90+ pts for larks thus year

  12. I thought the package for Alex DeBrincat was going to be either Boston's 1st next year or Detroit's 2026 1st, Alexandre Doucet, and Robbi Fabbri.

  13. Debrincat – Larkin – Raymond
    Perron – Compher – Sprong
    Fabbri – Copp – Berggren
    Rasmussen – Veleno – Kostin

    Walman – Seider
    Ghost – Holl
    Matta – Chairot

  14. Funny, that the DRW-page postet: Good Night Hockeytown with a smiling cat behind….and the next day the news dropped.

  15. Ooooooh yesss boys and girls!!!! We are on the way up! 👍 👍 👍 👍 Yzerplan fleeces again!
*sorry to see Kuby go though 😢

  16. Didn’t give up any prospects or players I didn’t want to give up so in that sense it was good but still not overly excited about this deal since I don’t think we’ll be anywhere close to a playoff spot and do any real damage in the next 4 yrs

  17. Dorian should be fired over this fiasco. Prime example of why you don't acquire expiring contracts with prime assets without an extension in place

  18. This confirms the playoff push for this year. With the addition of Debrincat, the top 6 is solidified, the bottom 6 is deep, and thw defensive pairs are solid. If Husso can improve on last year, then we're a dark horse for top 3 in the division…

  19. I am just ecstatic that we didn’t have to give up Berggren or Mazur..
And We have DeBrincat Producing as the youngsters that are developing work their way into our lineup In the near future
