OHL Weekend Notebook: Oct. 31, 2022

The OHL Weekend Notebook recaps the weekend that was with news, information and interesting facts from both on and off the ice.

Outstanding weekend for Otters
The Erie Otters enjoyed a perfect 3-0 weekend, knocking off the division rival Kitchener Rangers twice as they improved to 7-4-0-2 out of the gate. The Otters doubled-up the Rangers 6-3 at The Aud on Friday, handed the Windsor Spitfires their first regulation loss of the season at home by a score of 7-4 on Saturday, and defeated Kitchener 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Erie Insurance Arena. The Erie offence exploded for 20 goals in three games, led by Colby Saganiuk who posted seven points (3-4–7) while Kaleb Smith had six (2-4–6). Dallas Stars prospect Christian Kyrou headlined Sunday’s win with a natural hat trick. In goal, Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Nolan Lalonde returned from injury to earn both wins against Kitchener while recently acquired netminder Kyle Downey defeated his old Spitfires teammates on Saturday.

Attack keep rolling
The Owen Sound Attack are now winners of seven of their last eight games, putting in another perfect week of action. The Bears rode Carter George’s impressive debut to a comeback shootout victory in Barrie on Thursday, had four points from Deni Goure in a 5-2 win over Guelph on Saturday and took down the Kingston Frontenacs by a score of 4-1 at the Bayshore on Sunday. The Attack won all three games without injured captain Colby Barlow in the lineup as Goure stepped up for eight points (4-4–8) in three contests while Montreal Canadiens prospect Cedrick Guindon collected six (2-4–6). George went 2-0 in his first week of OHL action, stopping 41 of the 42 shots he faced in addition to eight Barrie shootout attempts on Thursday.

Brothers go head-to-head
Two sets of brothers squared off this past week, with twins Alex and Paul Christopoulos facing each other Thursday night in Windsor. The Christopoulos family was able to be on hand to see the first encounter between the two twins, who were previously on North Bay together upon entering the League. Alex’s Spitfires defeated Paul’s Battalion by a score of 6-3. Brothers Michael and Luke Misa also played against each other as Saginaw’s Michael bested brother Luke’s Mississauga Steelheads by a score of 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.
