Bennett hit on Alec Martinez – should it be routine?

Sam Bennett took Alec Martinez into the boards from behind. Based on today’s standards this is a routine clean play, but with Bennett never seeing anything but numbers, should it be?

  1. I see nothing wrong here, vgk player looked back he knew he was gonna take a hit, looks clean to me

  2. Any other time in the season, has a 50% chance of being called boarding (I say 50% because Martinez saw it and braced himself accordingly and didn't go down).

  3. It should only be routine if we don't mind retired players suffering from dementia in their sixties or fifties.

  4. I mean, I don't like hits from the back, specially if no intent to recover the puck or even eyes on that.

However, this hit was not too hard and it was kind of a whiff, since VGK player both saw FLA player getting there as well as protected the puck, so not too bad of a hit, SPECIALLY if you take into consideration it was made by Bennett

  5. Penalty if player hurt, no penalty if player not hurt. These are the “routine” hits from behind that lead to injuries. NHL allows them which is why players will continue to be injured. Hitting/bumping and pinning player I’m fine with, however Bennett’s likes to drive through the player from behind and at blind angles.

  6. Hitting from behind is dangerous. Bennett seems to graze him, if the contact was solid, Martinez would be stretchered off the ice.
