Nah this is an update. Apparently zadina refusing the assignment so this will be to terminate the contract.

Called it.
At least it’s mutual so no long dead cap.
GreenGlassFox
since people aren’t gonna read the article, Zadina apparently made it clear he will refuse to report to the AHL which is a contract violation. So this allows his contract to be terminated (not a buyout).
Interesting move by him, he’s walking away from nearly $5M in guaranteed money.
edit: the article mentions that Zadina has said he would refuse AHL assignment and says that would be a violation of his contract, but it’s not exactly clear if that is a violation right now or if it just would be one. So this might be a mutual agreement to terminate and not be the Wings acting on a contract violation. I’m not 100% sure on which it is. The article does also say Zadina is prepared to walk away and not contest the move.

>We’ll see what happens tomorrow, but there is word the Detroit Red Wings are considering placing Filip Zadina on waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract.
>**Zadina is owed $4.56M in salary over the next two seasons. This is tricky to report, because agent Darren Ferris would not comment, but, as I write this, the belief is Zadina is prepared to walk away from the money and not contest the move. According to several sources, in recent conversations, the player made it very clear he would not report if sent to the AHL next season. (That would be a contract violation.)**
>If he clears waivers, he could sign anywhere he wishes.
>Zadina asked for a trade before the draft, and the Red Wings placed him on regular waivers on Tuesday. Available to any team, everyone passed. Talking with local media, Yzerman made it clear salary was the problem.
>“Am I happy to put him on waivers? No. I signed him to a three-year contract a year ago because I believed that he was going to grow. The reality now is: you wanted that contract, that contract may prevent you from getting the opportunity you’re looking for in another organization.”
>Terminating it would solve the problem, but it’s a surprise we didn’t see coming. Zadina, the sixth overall pick in the 2018 draft, has 28 goals in 190 NHL games.
>The Red Wings could place him on waivers Thursday at noon ET.

Should probably go back to Europe, a lot of people mentioned Kubalik and the route he took to being the player he is right now. No shame if Zadina did the same thing, play 3-4 seasons in the Swiss league or something. Doesnt really matter when you get drafted or when you make the big league, as long as when you do it you do it right.

Wow. That’s a lot of money to leave on the table just so you don’t have to play in the minors. Grand Rapids is a nice city too, it’s not like he’s being sent to Newfoundland.

Don’t necessarily think this indicates anything malicious on Zadina’s part. He just realizes that his current contract is going to prevent him from getting a chance on another NHL team. I’m assuming his agent already has a one-year deal in place with another team and Zadina is choosing to walk away from the remaining money in his current to pursue that opportunity.

Walking away from ~$5M cash is an interesting choice, but since his contract was preventing him from getting an opportunity elsewhere I guess it’s the best way for him to get an NHL look elsewhere (since at a league minimum). Still a bit bold to leave that much on the table over 2 years, which he won’t be able to get on whatever he signs

Sucks we lost a 6th overall pick for nothing but honestly pretty happy this saga is almost over. Now lets hear more news about the cat!!

Zadina has always had an unfounded ego about him. Let’s see if this bold move works out.

Meh. I was excited that they drafted him, and I thought the Wings were getting a potential goal scorer, someone who could hopefully hit 30 goals reliably and even get to 40.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, he just didn’t work out. He’s a good player, you can tell he is talented and he works hard, he is a solid defensive player for a wing. It’s just… Unless he is providing offense, he is kind of a useless player. He isn’t very big, not the best skater, not physical, didn’t kill penalties, etc… The Wings just signed Sprong, who scored 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games for Seattle getting 4th line minutes. Even if Zadina were getting limited minutes, he could contribute as a depth scorer and PP specialist. He just struggled to put up offensive numbers.
I don’t see how giving him another shot will change anything, it’s just time to move on. Stinks to dump a young recent #6 overall pick, but it is what it is. Need to make moves to open roster spots for players that can hopefully make a bigger impact rather than hoping Zadina finally puts it together.
I wish him all the best and that he can figure it out somewhere else, I just don’t really see it happening.

Millions of dollars not enough to motivate him, not willing to work for a spot, poor decision making…
…man, it’s tough to understand why he didn’t pan out…
Councillor_Phlunt
Damn, didn’t see this coming. I figured he would still report to training camp and push for it, especially since he’s been working on getting stronger. Looks like he’s truly done with Detroit if he’s willing to leave 5m on the table.
Yamamoto got a 1.5×1 deal, I bet Zadina can find a 1×1 deal out there somewhere, but he better expect to have to work for the role he wants.

I’m going to miss the way he’d always try to shoot the puck through a goalie’s chest. The man never quit trying, gotta give him that. Respect.

Feeling like you’re too good for the AHL is a bold choice when you’re not good enough for the NHL.
MrMalredo
My guess, he just feels like he needs a fresh start somewhere else (he wants to move on from the organization and Grand Rapids is included as part of that), but a team doesn’t want to gamble on him with two years left on his contract, so his better option is to try and get a one year contract or go to another team’s training camp on a PTO.
schoobie_thomps
I feel like he’s taking a big bet on himself to take a 1 mil contract with another team. Maybe Kenny will circle back with those good ol tires.
Shotokanguy
What is this story? Some guy has heard that IF Zadina ends up being sent to GR, he said he wouldn’t go. It’s one thing to even assume Zadina will be sent down – we have 14 forwards, we don’t need to demote anybody. Then you deal with the “sources told me” aspect.
And even then, it sounds bad but it could just be Zadina doing what he needs to do to move on, without malice. I’m just gonna wait and see what happens because he does not need more negativity attached to him.

Dude is going to have a very hard time cracking any NHL lineup given that he had trouble making ours. AHL or Europe honestly might be the best thing for him.

The only way it makes sense is if he has an equivalent or better deal on the table in the Czech Republic. Which, if he does, good luck to him.
