Nylander is going to have to decide if he wants to accept a fair deal or get traded somewhere else. Luckily there’s 10 teams that he can get traded too so if he doesn’t want to sign for a fair market value then we will get a great return for him
I’m not stressed about this at all now. The leafs have all the power here and to me it seems like trieliving is someone with enough guts to make a hard decision now if he has to (especially after what happened to him in Calgary)

I can see it from both sides. Willy accepted a fair value deal last time around and watched Matthews and Marner get overpaid. Probably doesn’t want that to happen again.
But he’s really not worth much more than maybe 9M. He’s my favourite player on this team, but I think there’s a pretty clear path to us getting better by trading him for a cheaper but worse top six right winger plus whatever extra you can get to make up the value difference.
Find a good trade target who’s still cheap this year and next and we can avoid a crunch next year as well.

Why should Nylander take a haircut on another contract meanwhile Mitch and Mathews did/are taking the team to the cleaners? Leadership and culture start from the top and trickle down, not from the middle of the totem pole.

Out of the core 4, his last contract was probably the most team-friendly contract. And he plays better than everyone else on the team in the playoffs. This is most likely his last big pay check.
I wouldn’t ask for less either if I were him. Matthews or Marner should be the ones taking a bit less this time around and give Nylander the extra 1-2 million he wants.
