Analyzing the 2023 Montreal Canadiens NHL Draft class

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens

Scott and Laura discuss a truly confusing second day at the NHL Draft for the Montreal Canadiens. The hosts take a look at the good bits from the day, such as goaltender Jacob Fowler and the Habs insistence on cushioning their depth at the position, and the addition of two intriguing overage defenders in the later rounds. They also delve into some of the more head-scratching choices made by the Canadiens on the draft floor, including passing up many much more talented players in favour of off the board selections.

It’s also Friday, which means the Friday Mailbag returns with the hosts answering all of your listener questions!

  1. I was upset initially because I’ve always had the opinion that I’d rather we lose 7-6 then win 2-1. Unpopular opinion…I know.

  2. Giving up 31 and 37 were so bad. We lost out on some gems that were still available. Sooooo badly disappointed in the team this draft. Normally go to five + games every year but won't be going to any this year. I look at GM's like Yzerman and Sakic and they did amazing. Buffalo also did amazing. We sucked that's all I can say. No offensive help. We have no depth in the lineup.

  3. Just a thought, they are positioning themselves to have a solid back end which has been a blueprint for the recent cup winners. For lots of games these past few seasons the habs are having so much trouble on retrieving the puck in their zone. I was surprised with the pick but after few moments, the pick made sense. Will this be a Brady Tkachuk moment?(assuming people wanted Leonard) I mean look around the league, so many teams with “game breaking” players yet they can’t even get deep into a playoff run ehem Leafs ehem People forget that last year’s draft, the habs picked so many high skilled players that now they picked team need players. There are only 20 players that a team can have in a game. They are willing to give chance to players such as Roy, Kidney, Ferrell, Heinemen, RHP, Ylonen, Mesar and Beck, just to name a few, to crack that top 9. VGK had 2 players who are on phase for a point per game this season and both missed games but others didn’t even come close yet they won over 50 games last season. McDavid has been torching the league since he got drafted yet he hasn’t even came close to a Stanley Cup final. The habs are building a contender to win multiple cups not to have the greatest show on ice.

  4. The trick is never getting greedy & realizing too many forward's is not the answer & too many high caliber players will eventually put us in cap trouble 🤔it's a balancing act 🤔 don't forget we still have a bunch of assets to go🤔GO HABS GO 💕💕

  5. There is an interesting blind spot in the criticism of the past few days. Hughes is being faulted for being too ‘safe’, and yet this draft is full of gambles. Time will tell if the gambles work out. Really I think fans don’t want gambles at all. People have convinced themselves that Michkov will compete for a Richard Trophy in 4 years time. They fault Hughes because they are sure this will happen. It’s an easy position to hold because it will take years to test, but don’t call a team safe for not following your perceptions of the prospects available.

  6. Well said Laura! To the Trolls: If you want to jump in a river for your uneducated opinion lol do you think it will help? Lol

  7. I went into this week feeling really excited and I end it feeling really let down. There were a lot of reaches . They ended up with a 2nd pair D, a third line LW, a back up goalie and a lot of absolute crap.

  8. I'm glad they got some goalies. They were hurting for goalies. Primeau was a huge area of concern. They need goalie competition.

  9. Pro scouts are now reporting the Michkov camp were putting out hints he wasn't interested in any destination other than Philly. Who knows why but it has shades of Jagr draft year. Many also worried you have zero control over his development while he spends 3 or more years in the now watered down KHL.

  10. I dont think they want to be bad longer. They are not worried about a stanley cup. They want to be a perenial plaayoff team that maybe goes one or two rounds and fill Molsons pockets. Thats all. And it shows with theboveragers. They are accelerating thebtimeline to just be a playoff team.

  11. European men’s league draft year
    Dahlia 0.49 2018
    Hedman 0.49. 2009
    REINBACHER 0.48 2023
    Heiskanen 0.27 2017
    Josi. 0.23 2008
    Seider 0.21. 2019
    😉👍

  12. This draft was an advanced rebuild draft. Molson doesn't want too many loosing seasons. Next year is the last acceptable non playoff contention year.

  13. So woke chick says we shouldn't care that much, because you are a fan of the team. What a horrible take, no wonder your podcast blows and has dropped off the charts. She's so woke and lame lol

  14. I’m a glass half full type of person so I’m not at all down on this year’s draft. I’m hoping that:

    1) The Habs can stay healthy next year so we can have a better idea of what this team can do.
    2) That all these promising rookie defencemen we have in the system will pan out and since we can’t possibly sign them all, other teams will come knocking wanting to trade a quality forward for a quality young D.

  15. It took me 2 days to get over this draft that u was so excited about. TIme will tell but this may go down as one of the worst drafts for Habs. Reinbacher looks comparable to Jeff Petry but with less offense. A fine pick but at 5th overall was a reach when there was. Potential to draft another goal scorer. I did like the choice of drafting Arber's brother as i could see him being a bigger meaner version of Pezzetta.

  16. He said he was going to take best player available. So the trust is broken because that obviously didn’t happen. That xhekaj pick…he should be fired over that.
