[The Athletic] Our team and league sources expect the Canucks to try and land at least one of Cole/Soucy. With Bear not qualified however, internal discussions on FRI turned toward the possibility of perhaps pursuing both players to bolster the size, toughness and defensive IQ of VAN’s blue-line.

This is a Drance and Dhaliwal PAYWALL article. I have shared *only* a snippet. If you find it interesting and wish to read more, please read the rest on the Athletic.

One thing I have really liked so far about Jim and Alvin; Last year to this upcoming year only Hughes and Myers are the holdovers on defence. And they might be trying to move Myers still. It’s been a complete defensive overhaul.

Man, I want nothing to do with an Ian Cole contract.

He’s 34, probably looking for a multi-year deal at a price higher than anyone should be committing to a player that old, and has had recent rape allegations levied against him.

Soucy on paper is fine as a player, but he’s a 3rd pair defenseman who’s going to be paid as a top-4 guy. Basically a more expensive Tucker Poolman.

Signing Soucy/Cole wouldn’t be the worst, they aren’t absolute tirefires. But signing them to 3+ million deals when they are, at best, 5/6 guys is absurd. Why even buy out OEL if you’re gonna end up using the freed cap space on guys that are worse than him?

    > Landing either Soucy or Cole, or both, will surely require deals in the **two-or-three year range, with compensation beginning at a $3 million AAV at least for both players.** The Canucks have the cap space to pull it off, particularly now that $2.2 million of additional flexibility has been formally cleared up.

    Ugghhhhh. Life is pain.

With Hronek, Cole and Soucy, our defense is no longer the glaring problem it once was.

  6. Both Soucy and Cole are decent defensive 2nd pairing guys.

Significant upgrades over OEL, Myers, Stillman and others defensively.

Contracts are going to be interesting… hopefully only 2 years for Cole.

  7. Friedge thinks Cole will be 1 year in Van.

    Soucy multi year.

Solves exactly no problems and costs too much money? Absolutely, says this joke of a franchise!

Like… guys, Mike Reilly is right there. You had Bear. A Bear / Reilly pairing would be extremely solid.

Wow, looks like our defense is going through some serious makeover! Time for a new fashion line – ‘Canucks D-Line Couture’!

Looks like the Canucks are playing musical chairs with their defense! Hoping Myers doesn’t end up dancing alone. 🕺😂

  11. All that matters is the amount and term. It’d be really stupid to spend a lot when nobody had cap and is trying to get bargains.
