The Detroit Red Wings Nate Danielson 9th and Axel Sandin Pellikka 17th!

The Detroit Red Wings selected smooth skating center Nate Danielson 9th from the Brandon Wheat Kings. Then, at 17 they took Swedish puck moving defensman Axel Sandin Pellikka to bolster their back end defense. But was using these picks the right move? #lgrw

  1. I'm not a fan of Danielson at 9 but I think Pelikka is a great pick at 17. I"ll trust Yzerman but I'm very dissapointed we didn't get some offensive punch. I keep waiting for it and they just never go for it in the first round.

  2. I get Danielson is a decent pick but I’m lowkey sick of saying this player will be a great 3C or 2C like him, kasper, veleno and rass, I would just like to see a swing for the fences type pick im getting frustrated with this

  3. I think they are building a team that's going to be VERY hard to play against. Once they get that foundation down, then they can go out and get a couple high profile players. Plus there's still the 2nd round, and free agency to make some moves. We HAVE to spend some money this off season.

  4. I’m perfectly ok with these picks seems like stevie went out there and Knew the kids he wanted. And we are still under the cap floor

  5. I think he is a solid pick for number 9. Very good two way player and he is a leader with good character. I think character is very important for Stevie. Vrana has massive skills but poor character and Stevie paid to get rid of him. I think it gives a little insight into his thinking. Is he right, heck I don't know, but I like the direction we are moving.

  6. It’s hard to figure out what our window realistically is. We trade Bertuzzi because his age doesn’t fit with the core and timeline (I assume), yet he’s only a year older than Larkin and is exactly the type of player you have to have to win in the playoffs.

So is Yzerman banking on Larkin being past his prime when we’re ready to contend? It’s looking that way. Imo, we’re a lot further away from contending than most fans think. Still have faith in Stevie though.

  7. just no to debrincat, small, doesn't drive play, and has a high cost of acquisition. next year as UFA go ahead if the price works. this year would rather have Konecny.

  8. I’ll be much happier with these picks if we get DeBrincat on top of it all. If we don’t, I think that’d be a fumble on Yzerman’s part tbh, no need to be that tight fisted.

  9. He is a good skater at center (finally a high end center), he could find a groove and make an impact in a year or two.

  10. Not feeling it. Another subpar season on the horizon. My confidence in Stevie Y is slipping. Still love 'im, though.

  11. Nate Danielson was on a very weak team. We desperately needed a right-handed forward. If Yzerman drafted Pellikka at 9 and Danielson at 17 people wouldn't be as disappointed.

  12. Besides Seider, how has Yzerman done a solid job drafting for the Wings? The team really needed another 35 point third line player! If a team wins cups by having the largest group of “meh” players, the Wings are a dynasty! Danielson fits right in with that

  13. I see Danielson being a Eric Staal like- Longevity, good D, solid role player, and specialty reams guru. U need a guy like this in your lineup

  14. Connor Bedard said that Danielson is a close friend of his and is one of the hardest players to play against so that has my bid of confidence.

  15. In my opinion, I think there is overreaction to the we needed debrincat, and we NEEDED to make that trade. We dont if you pay attention to our pipe line and now our established blue line. Like.. hell, look at the picks of the late playoff pushers, they land snipers that get skipped mid to late draft, there will be opportunities for goal scorers and superstars in free agency. Steve is smart; dont overreach for a forced trade on the brink, wait it out til the trades make sense and your great scouting with time will pay off. No one I really talk to is churning inside of how long it takes as we all know our GM now is COMPETANT in Yzerman. We will make it to the playoffs soon, and our wait will pay off will playoffs for longevity and cup champs. That is what the Yzerplan with stevie means.

  16. the Karate Kid and the Sand Pelican, not a bad first round, i'm also excited to see Wallinder this year in GR, Kasper was my pick for #8 last year, we should wait for Debrincat maybe he makes UFA next year and we could get him without losing picks/prospects

  17. Great picks again from Steve Yzerman !!! Congratulations on a great 2023 draft for Detroit. The future is bright.

  18. SO F***ING TIRED OF THE DEBRINCAT TALK AND PROPOSALS, STOP PLEASE!

Yzerman rarely drafts small players who aren't good defensively so why would he trade PREMIUM assets for one who is going to want almost 10 million for 8 years. Debrincat not a playoff type of player and will literally get manhandled in the corners. He's not winning many puck battles. Only 5 foot 7, Soderblom is literally a foot taller than him and was 7th in SHL goals. Goalscoring should be the LAST thing you address once goalie, defense and center are set. In 4 or 5 years when the Red Wings really need cap space to keep their young players that contract could be terrible. If he wants to sign as a UFA for a slight hometown discount without a NTC in the later years that's one thing, but trading any top prospects or picks for him is STUPID. Would be an extremely impatient move and that's what all the other dumb GMs do is get impatient. The only players Yzerman drafted on the team are Seider and Raymond, have a little patience people. Wings aren't even at the stage of being a young exciting team yet, teardown JUST finished with Bert and Hronek gone. They could bottom out again next year and get a top 10 or even top 5 pick and I would be fine with that, it would be better in the long run. Yzerman playing chess and the other GMs playing checkers. This team will be an absolute powerhouse again one day and they will be at the top for a LONG time.

I give absolutely ZERO F**S if he's from Michigan, WHO GIVES A *** IF HE'S FROM MICHIGAN. Yzerman not evaluating players on sentimental value.

  19. Think you're over reading into Stevie's comments Brian. I think they're doing everything to get D-Cat, but I think Pierre's price is too high atm and Steve made a good choice not submitting. Even if they stand pat and keep D-Cat for the year that only helps our cause to some extent. If their ask was 17 and a prospect or w/e , I'm personally glad he kept 17.
Really I guess I'm just saying Alex isn't off the table yet.

  20. Any money Yzerman signs John Klingberg to play Sandin-Pellika's role until he is ready in 2-3 years. Powerplay/ 2nd pair with offensive zone starts and probably a bit sheltered.

  21. The Ben Chiarot contract didn't hurt the team long run either, there is only 3 years left on it.

  22. Red Wings 2nd round picks:
    Michael Hrabal
    Kasper Halutten
    Maxim Strbak

Lucas Dragicevic, Gavin Brindley or Gracyn Sawchyn would be great too.

  23. I don't know why anyone would be getting impatient with the state of the team. To say it's disheartening to hear Yzerman say we are still in asset acquisition mode is a little blind to the weaknesses of this roster.
Let's look at the successful rebuilds, keyword successful, because there are loads of rebuilds that are just failures even though they ice some pretty good teams. NSH, PHI, and SJ come to mind of good teams that just had too many flaws that they couldn't fix once established as strong teams.. All the truly great rebuilds of the last 20 years, teams like PIT, CHI, and TB. They didn't make too many titanic size trades over that time. Most of those teams actually made their biggest trades once they were contenders or even champions already. DET also has the added set back of not being able to build around a Crosby, Ovie, Mcdavid, Toews, Kane, Stamkos, or Kucherov. Then you also add that the Eastern Conference is still a nightmare. DET is rising at the same time as BUF, NJ, and OTT which is competition that has more top end talent than us. I think DET has better depth than those team, save NJ since they look even better going into next season. Worse I doubt WAS will have the injury issues they did this year, BOS could get younger (as they have to this point in the off season), and PIT will have cap space for the first time in awhile making none of them not in contention for those wildcard spots.
In in my opinion DET should not go out and make big trades yet. Let's see what we actually have in our prospects and assets, because as good as Kasper, Edvinsson, Johansson, Sebrango, Wallinder, Soderblom, Mazur, Lombardi, and now Danielson and Sandin Pelikka look we still don't know what they are. We still technically don't know what Seider and Reymond are (though they look like studs to me). If we trade any of those guys or picks before we know what we have we could find ourselves looking like MIN, LA, or CAL good but not good enough. Or worse we get some really good high end scorers and we are EDM or TOR, contenders until some deeper team cleans our clock.
Keep the prospects and picks until we know who's going to be our role and core players then trade the extras and hopefully we'll start to look really attractive to those elite free agents when they come around.

  24. The unpredictable, unapologetic, elusive, Steve Yzerman and Brad Holmes DEFINITELY went to the same Harvard Advanced University School for GM's 😅.. I believe Troy Weaver went there as well.. just took the "Ums" classes but got his degree!😁.. these are men who LOVE to go against the grain and do what is necessary for the culture and future of their respective teams!..
It's bold and innovative and I'm here for it!..
Show's a lot about a man's character when he's willing to go against the grain to do what needs to be done and still come out successful.. we need to let these men continue to cook and transform our teams! Because whether it's going quick enough for us fans or not is irrelevant, one thing you can say about ALL Three men, is that our teams have been showing constant progression year-to-year in the construction of how the overall model will soon look!..

Hang in their Detroit fans, we're on the rise!

  25. You know, people had this same reaction to Danielson as they did with Seider. The fact that they went into left field like that makes me hopeful that they see something promising that we dont.

  26. If the wings are in trade talks he said exactly the right thing. It keeps the price from going up .

  27. Do you think Yzerman prefers to take strong defensive two way players and develop the offence versus trying to eliminate bad habbits from offensive players?

  28. steve wont make an trade if i jepordice the progress so i think he called about debrinket but found the wanted price to much.

  29. He straight up said before the draft he didn't want to move 9 or 17. Let the man cook. We hold all the cards.

  30. "Bringing the floor up" with a top 10 pick is really a pathetic statement. This is the 2nd year in a row they have spent a top 10 pick shooting for a middle six player. This team has depth. It is missing top end talent, and they refuse to spend their top 10 picks on top end talent. On top of that, they have a tendency to make redundant picks. Kasper and Danielson are basically the same player, and they are not far off from Larkin. This team is missing a high end, dynamic center and goal scoring. They passed on both two years in a row to grab what they hope is a safe 2 – 3C. The #17 pick was a better pick than the #9 pick.

  31. I'm sure Danielson will be fine just disappointed we again sit there and let the goal scorers go off the board.

  32. I’m still disappointed in Danielson pick. There was a chance to pick elite talent in Benson, who also competes hard. And they passed that up for another middle 6 player. ASP pick was great it made the night a bit better

  33. Glad we picked a C as #9 which has a high ceiling. Gives Nate's & Kasper competition for many years to come who is 2C, love it.

ASP as #17 is our future QB in PP, he will replace and relieve MO and will boost our special teams. #LGRW

  34. This team will be stuck in mediocrity for literally the next 10 years. I can’t even honestly say I’m a fan of this team. No identity, no scoring, average defense, bad goaltending, no grit, and I don’t see this changing any time soon.
