In the midst of a chaotic day in the NHL, and the day before the NHL Draft the Montreal Canadiens stunned everyone by making a trade for former first round pick Alex Newhook. Paying a seemingly big price of the 31st, and 37th overall picks, in addition to defenceman Gianni Fairbrother, the Habs landed a young forward with room to grow in Montreal. The hosts discuss the trade and whether or not it’s worth the price the Canadiens paid.
And now, with two draft picks gone from their back pockets, what are the Montreal Canadiens exactly up to at the NHL Draft? Scott thinks the team is going to be locked into trading down to recoup a pick along the way, meaning the dreams of Matvei Michkov might be at an end.

It also adds another roster player and they already have too many players.
The only way they trade down at this point is if someone wants Mitchkov bad enough at 5 and they just go get Leonard, but if thats the case Leonard wont go past the Flyers either so pretty limited options there

Habs fans are so funny,,, you’ve never seen Newhook play but your judging the trade,,, Newhook will probably be your #2C , cause Dack will go to the wing,,, right now your GM is in the business of getting as many as many assets as possible, then when they have enough assets and then you’re ready to be a contender for years ,,, let me tell you if you don’t know yet the Habs are 3 to 4 yeas away from that! Habs fans want the best rookies but also want to be in the playoffs right away,,,PS Dubois at 8.5 million is a lot of $ for a guy who doesn’t put up at least a point per game and is known to take lots of shits off,,, how long will it take for him to wanna be tarred from LA, if he doesn’t deliver?

Suzuki is a very good second line center on a top team.
Dach, still looks like a winger, until he learns face-offs.
Newhook @ 5-10 190 lbs small-ish, greats skills-should be a top six winger also.
Dubois had bonafide center potential. but is still a head case. LA needs a goalie, then they are contenders.
Habs need a big center prospect, unfortunately Fantilli and Carllson will be gone.
The center – Smith is 6 ft and ranked at 5th on some sites. touted as having serious IQ, a play maker.
I heard a rumor….dont know if this is true but apparently Geoff Molson is meeting Michkov Wednesday morning prior to the draft…if this is true…maybe the Habs will be drafting Michkov at 5 if he's available.
I really believe Dach and Suzuki are going to be great players for the Habs for many years. They might not be superstars but perhaps a level below that. I have more faith in Dach than PLD and I'm glad we didn't pay that price for him.
In 2005 I wanted the Habs to draft Gilbert Brulé. And when they chose Carey Price I was so mad I punched breaker box at the restaurant I worked at and I broke my hand. Let’s just say I learned a valuable lesson that day… don’t get too worked up over draft picks. You have ZERO idea who will end up a hall-of-famer and who will be a complete bust.
Scott nailed it, with his comment about PLD filling the net against the Habs. kotkaniemi seems to rub it in when he plays against us as well. Former players have come back to haunt us to many times
hes a good playerbut at the cost of a first and second was too high,joe sakic aint no fool,in the biggest draft since 2015 or since 79 colorado did great..

Alex Newhook is between a weird combination. A Speedster , A Scorer, A Warrior. A Stanley Cup Winner. IF Alex Newhook was good enough to be Nazim Khadri Replacement . Avs will have keep him. Gianni Fairbrother is a throw in we don't need him in Montréal or Laval so we sent him on his way. I like Fairbrother but injury slow down his progress therefore he got a second chance in Colorado. Good luck to him ! Statistically speaking Everybody has 1% success rate with 31rst and 37th pick.
Montréal took Logan Mailloux with 31rst in Montréal.
You could have a Brandan Lemieux type of player for that pick.
Patrice Bergeron was pick #33.
Shea Weber was pick #45.
Not trading down. Newhook is a versatile player that can play wing or center. That will allow them to pick Carlsson, Smith or Michkov if the other two are gone. He’s obviously looking for close to NHL ready players. Since Mailloux didn’t get moved for Dubois, they don’t really have room or want to wait for an 18 year old defenseman.
I like it, Habs have a lot of young prospects , basically for 2 seconds they get somebody now, they still have 3 thirds, Newhook will hit the ground running, the players they pick in the second round will probably stay in junior for 2 yrs and then one yr in Laval, and then score maybe 15 goals in their rookie yr, if they make it at all.
For the mailbag, would have it made more sense for LA to sweeten their deal and get Hellebuck in stead, they have no goalie. Maybe we can trade Allen for a second round pick

Kirby Dach was traded to the Habs by Chicago for the No13 and No66 picks in the 2022.
BUT Montreal had acquired that No13 pick from the Islanders in a trade for Romanov and No98 pick in the 2022 draft.

It's weird you're hostile towards pld when it was you guys sitting around on your asses not offering anything realistic and then over paying for dach, Dvorak and newhook. Also in those trades they wanted picks, not your overvalued players. Just because you overpay for third liners doesn't mean others teams will.

Sounds like a lot of bitter Habs fans out there today blaming PLD for Hughes' failure to aquire him. To say PLD never actually wanted to be a Hab is ridiculous, almost as ridiculous as the price paid for Newhook. Just waiting on Hughes to pass on Michkov at #5 to make this the best day ever!

What I like about Newhook is that he's young enough to be able to improve if he's on a team that is good at developing players, which the Habs appear to be now. We already know his floor (30+ points NHL bottom-6 player), we can guess his ceiling might be 2nd line forward and Montreal may be the best place for him to reach that ceiling. Me, assuming he gets enough minutes and good linemates I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually becomes a 45+ points player.
Alex Newhook is really really good and totally worth the picks
Cale Makar was ranked 13-16th and was picked 4th… Colorado fans are not complaining now. Reinbacher is legit and the advanced stats show he is worthy of a top 5 pick

As an Avs fan, I'll take those picks over Newhook. Newhook has been very disappointing in CO, especially in 22-23 where our roster was wide open due to open spots and injuries. Newhook did nothing to earn top 6 minutes here. He's a very vanilla, bottom six player and I don't see him turning around.
U guys did overpay imo, especially now being the next day, we now know Colorado used that 37th pick to get Ross Colton from Tampa to replace Newhook. Colton and Newhook had basically same amount of points in same amount of games in fact Colton even had one more point in one less game, so now they end up having Colton to replace Newhook and having a free 1st round(the 31st Montreal pick). So the Habs probably coulda just traded with Tampa instead with their 37th and get Colton as opposed to giving away the 37th and 31st for Newhook. So yeah u guys defs overpaid imo.
Hopefully the habs don't get michkov and that drama can be over too
