  1. What do you guys think? Was the price paid for Newhook too steep or is it a good trade? I personally LOVE this deal but I'm seeing lots of negativity about it on twitter. Discuss!

  2. PLD trade was put on hold, for MTL to finalize their deal with Colorado. Get MTL to announce this trade in order to soften the blow of not getting PLD.

  3. yes they did it again,in the deepest draft in years, they traded their first and second for an unproven player, yes they did it again..

  4. I LOVE THIS MANAGENENT GROUP. LOVE 'EM. Did not overpay for PLD. Newhook is going to be sooooo good. From my home province. LOVE you Habs. Can not wait for the draft tomorrow. Took the day off work to watch. So excited for the Habs future. So happy!!!

  5. The Habs discovered that they wanted Newfie native Alex Newhook on their team on Discovery Day yesterday in Newfoundland. They pulled the trigger on the deal today. 🤘🏽

  6. That's interesting news. All the sudden we are stacked down the middle. Either they will make him a winger or this means they are taking Michkov if he falls to 5. Told ya.😊

  7. The 2 picks are easy to give up for this strong ,tough fast ,skilled NHLer ..Hab fans will love this late bloomer that was set back being a college player instead of pro …PLD was wrong age , attitude and salary for this Hab build …

  8. What about Beck? What about Kidney? They don't need a center in the draft necessarily. Lots to think about now! Good luck

  9. Winnipeg FLEECED LA 😂😂😂 great work by Winnipeg’s GM… Montreal also got fleeced as of right now lol it could look even later on but as of right now Montreal gave up wayyyyy to much for him… players available at 31st and 37th could have been top 25 picks last year! We gave up to much. If he reaches his potential the trade may be even.

  10. The Habs are looking for a long term partner for Slafkovsk and Dach on the Second Trio. Will Smith will be on the first trio.

  11. With Monahan re-signed, I can't see a lineup where Monahan is wingin' it, and Newhook is centering his 3rd line. My guess is, assuming they find a dance partner for a Dvorak trade, and despite them hoping to develop Dach as a center, It'll be Suzuki – Monahan – Newhook – Evans down the middle.
They need to give Monahan a chance to showcase himself as the top-6 center that I believe he can be. After that, if they are out of a playoff spot, Monahan likely gets traded at the deadline (hopefully for a bundle). Then they can move Dach to develop as 2C, cycle forwards on the first line to find chemistry (Slav maybe? I'd love to see that work out) and Newhook might get a shot at 2C then. They traded for a center, I can't see them using him on the wing long-term.

As for the return, yes its a deep draft, yes they've hit gold before in the late first and early second, but, realistically, you're most likely looking at a player who has equal (or lesser) potential of Newhook, and unlikely to find two. Newhook is already there and has proven to be reliable in the middle-six.

As a fellow Newfie and a diehard habs fan, I'm happy to see Newhook on the habs. I was happy to see him available to the habs in the 2019 draft, slightly disappointed when they didn't take him (though not at all now in retrospect) and excited to see him wearing the bleu-blanc-et-rouge and to see what he can do under St.Louis!

ps: Didn't realize you were from Newfoundland! Recently stumbled across your videos and have liked what you've done! Keep up the good work!

  12. Good trade. Only about 1 in 3 1st round picks end up playing 100 games in the NHL so that late first rounder doesn't hurt.

Newhook at 5'10 is almost 200 lbs which is pretty thick for his height & hard to move off the puck. He is one of the fastest skaters in his draft & at 22 years old still has his best years ahead of him. He played between 12 – 15 minutes à night with Colorado in a middle 6 role / bottom 6 more often than not and has consistently put up at least 30 points.

He fits in Montreal's timeline and can replace Jake Evans at worst (who is the tbi equivalent of a glass jaw) or can be moved to the wing and move up and down the lineup.

  13. Hughes was Newhook's agent, so I guess he is in a good position to have a good deal for the Habs

  14. I admire your enthusiasm, but iMO this is a huge gaffe by Hughes. He had a legitimate star in the bag in PLD, who really wanted to play in Montreal, and blew that opportunity. Settled for Newhook but had to give up two quite high picks in a very deep draft to get him. The Avs totally fleeced Hughes on the Lehkonen deal and they've just done it again. I hope I'm wrong.

  15. He’s been a poor player thus far. He’s got speed that’s it. He won’t make a good center because he is terrible defensively and not a good playmaker. Sounds like your are too close to this one.

  16. I get you're excitement. I was happy when Subban got drafted. There will not be another Hab born in Rexdale again.

I do worry about Newhook because the Avs dropped his ice time at the end of the year. He was playing closer to 15 minutes until the last month of the year then he was lucky to get 10 minutes a game. Hopefully the new opportunity and more ice is what he needs.

  17. Not to swear by Elliot Friedman as the be all and end all of hockey insider knowledge but he did tell habsfantv that he’s heard Montreal are willing to move down if the guy they want (will smith?) is not available at 5, so the Habs could very well still have a deep draft in the first round, could be two late 1st round picks or a middle first round pick and a prospect.
Then again Kent Hughes rarely makes moves that are similar to what the media actually talk about him doing.

  18. newhook is good but hes not great. Habs overpaid for this player. I guess they have to try for something with the horrible team the have.

  19. He's often at the right place at the right time…. to pick up 1 point every 3 games he plays….good riddance to an overhyped player.
