How one violent hit snowballed into years of championship-grade hockey beef | Red Wings vs Avalanche

In game six of the 95-96 Western Conference Finals, Claude Lemieux ran Kris Draper into the boards during an Avalanche win that knocked the Red Wings out of the playoffs. It also ignited a rivalry that would go on until 2003. In that span, the teams combined for 5 Stanley Cups, 2 major brawls, countless other fights, and so many penalties. Highlights include multiple goalie vs. goalie fights, coaches screaming at coaches, blood, hits, revenge, and really good hockey.

Special thanks to Adrian Dater and his book “Blood Feud”

  1. As a Red Wings fan, our rivalry with the Avalanches shall stay in our hearts throughout both of our histories. Thanks for the amazing memories and fights, even if you did push Kris Draper into the wall

  2. Клод Лемье все таки хороший был игрок .пусть грязно играл.но перстни у него говорят за него.игра всегда это эмоции.в жизни совсем другое.здоровье этим ветеранам

  3. I'm so happy you finally covered this beef, as person who was born and raised in Colorado I'm pretty familiar with these two teams and the blood that was spilt, the avs used to have an all-star team, Joe sakic, Patrick Roy, Adam Foote, Peter Forseberg, Alex Tanguay, Ray bourque.

  4. YouTube must be full of snowflakes, they just warned me for my comment below that they would restrict my account if I continue commenting like that but I literally said nothing wrong, If there's anything I can do to fight these idiots please comment below 👇

  5. as a long time Avs fan i have to say that was a really dirty hit by Lemieux who i never liked and was so glad the Avs let him go the next year. They were better and more honorable without him. Hated him since he was in NJ cause i grew up in Philly and was a Flyers fan. Lemieux a dirty player who almost never dared to fight when it was time to answer for his sins

  6. As an Avs fan since 1995…we actually REALLY hated the "Dead Things" as we called them.
But the craziest part is…that was the MOST FUN hockey times ever to be a fan. So I guess we loved to hate the Wings.
Since 2014, however, we hate the Minnesota Mild that started with Matt Cooke causing our Tyson Barrie to leave first round, with an extremely dangerous knee on knee. It was intentional but it didn't stop there. They were bringing mugshots to games of Varly who was a victim of an abusive Psycho ex and he was completely cleared from that drama.
Then, the fan fight, when Mild fans only showed half of the action when a Mild fan kicked the back of an Avs fans head and then started recording the reaction fight. We were there, so we saw what happened. Trash. Mild are the new hated team
Although you will never hear Avs fans resist showing respect to the old days by chanting "Red Wings Suck" everytime they come to Denver. But now it's more of a nostalgia fun and the Wings fans have been really classy in our house since 2012. Of course there are some bad fans that make everyone look bad but we mostly have a healthy and friendly rivalry today with the Wings. Solely for the love of the old days. 😅
We were also at the Alumni game and it was awesome.

  7. NHL hocky is still fun to watch, but having been a hardcore Avs fan during the 90s and early 2000s has made everything since seem disappointing by comparison. Not only was this rivalry incredibly entertaining due to the fights, personalities, and drama that took place during it, but I literally got to watch more than a dozen of the best NHL players of all time go head to head in some of the best hocky games ever played. Simply put, the NHL will never be this good ever again.

  8. Not true, the rivalry started before the hit. The Draper hit was the boiling point. In other words good video

  9. Dude… nobody gives two shots about what you look like while recording your vocals. Yes you have tattoos… cool… so does EVERYONE ELSE. r/iamthemaincharacter vibes

  10. Best hockey rivalry I’ve witnessed. Both had a ridiculous amount of great players, hated each others guts, and each got good victories against the other. Hard to see a rivalry that will top these.

I didnt have a hockey team back then, and was a casual fan but these games were must see TV

  11. Colorado was so stacked it was ridiculous in certain seasons especially when they had Borque that one year Detroit was almost just as stacked this was the last time i actually watched hockey

  12. These two teams dominated the NHL from 1996-2002, they hated each other, they both were loaded with super star players, and gave us the greatest rivalry in NHL history.
In those 7 seasons this rivalry was the Hatfield’s vs. McCoy’s, Ali vs. Frazier, Michigan vs. Ohio State all on steroids!
