Colt’s Dragoon

Shooting and demonstrating the classic Colt Dragoon ( 3rd Model). Come enjoy the trials and tribulations our forefathers experienced in order to have a revolver that would fire six powerful .44 rounds ( Actually, it is 45 caliber) back in the late 1840s.
I had both .451 and .454 size round balls and figured the .454 would certainly be large enough since they work in the 1860 Army Colt, but this thing needs .457, at least. I have some on order and will let you know how they work. The patches work, but who needs yet another step to further complicate the loading process. 🙂

  1. Luv my big ol' hefty CVA /Colt 3rd Mdl Dragoon!
I also have the 1860 Army Colt which I think is such a beautifully balanced revolver in the hand.
I personally experienced more jams from spent caps on the Army than I ever did the Dragoon.
I found that my Dragoon shoots high too, and I learned that the sights (on mine at least) were marked out for approx 50 feet, at anything under 50 feet I had to hold low to hit the target.
A wonderful shooting iron, the action on mine is like melted butter & the recoil is a gentle lift as opposed to a sharp crack like modern pistols.

  2. I have a Colt Walker. I only load one at a time. I use very high quality lead balls that fit tightly. I only load 30 grains of powder (FF). I do not want to chance blowing it up.

  3. Colt was known for their nice cylinder scene engravings. Each one they made was able to have it because it was engraved into the roll-forger that made the cylinders. Basically the engraving on the tooling in the factory was pressed onto the rolling cylinders when they were red hot.

  4. To anyone who is hung up on the slow loading process, like stated in the video the old Walkers were issued in pairs back in the Mexican American war. And those revolvers were accurate and deadly out to 100+ yards. So they had 12 shots, plus their muskets, and then a melee weapon like a saber. Their opponents had muskets and flintlocks and swords. So the advantage they held was HUGE. Being able to fire thirteen times before needing to reload was completely unprecedented. And even in modern times, the loading is part of the fun:)

  5. The fact that those old cap and ball revolvers took so long to reload. Is why people carried more than one pistol. Instead of risking your life to stop and reload, you simply grab another gun.

  6. Cornmeal works very good in place of wads. This is especially true if you're 'under' loading the powder. You can keep the cornmeal in another flask. So you basically load all chambers in black powder, then all chambers in cornmeal, then load balls last. With some practice and a good system it can be done fairly quickly

  7. Black smoke "cough" gave your position away Hickok.
Gotta work on that gorilla warfare brother. Great video, thanks 🤠

  8. Pretty sure this is the gun used by Glanton's scalp-hunters in Blood Meridian.

  9. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more anxious thumb than hickock’s waiting to thumb that pretty dragoon 0:31

  10. I would love to shoot one of those ! Love that sound, too! Amazing to me to watch this process of loading, while trying to imagine how fast someone in a combat situation could perform that. Thank you for the education about this beautiful weapon.

  11. Where would you pick up a bag of those patches for loading, at a historic pistols website ??
