What If…? The Blackhawks Came Calling With Their #1 Pick? Mikko’s Season Grade.

*****FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY!!*****

Just wanted to make that clear.

But, what if the Chicago Blackhawks, with that coveted #1 pick, called up the Colorado Avalanche and said “we have a #1 pick (Bedard) and you have some superstars. Let’s talk”.

We lay out why the Avalanche would never do this, but why Chicago might have some interest in pulling the trigger.

We also get to Mikko Rantanen’s season grade. Spoiler alert…all A’s

Finally, the outdoor games are enjoyed by many. Where are some off-the-beaten-path venues they could hold one of the outdoor spectacles?

  1. To answer the title's question- goodbye anyone but MacKinnon or Makar.

  2. I could see, but not most likely seeing, the Hawks trading down to get Michkov, and the ton of asset for Bedard. Someting close to Lindros trade, Chicago may bite. Or if they feel that Bedard unconformable. Montreal may be able to put such a package together

  3. Give up Rantenon, based on his contract. They won’t be able to resign him. However, I wouldn’t even consider any of this viable. But- what if?

  4. Mikko- A+ on the season. I have a couple critiques of him(and yes, I love Mikko more than most). 1- I would love to see him use that big body in a more physical manner, particularly on defense.2- I’d love to see him not defer to MacKinnon quite as much. Mikko carried the Avs when he was absent. I think the European in him makes him defer. If he did not, but played with the same authority as when MacKinnon is present, they would be just as good as McDavid and Dreiseitl.

  5. It's a fun question. Untouchables are Makar, MacKinnon, and Rantanen; they would want one of those three. So, no.
I wouldn't do it anyway because Bedard is potential only right now. Yes, he may be a game changer and the next Sid the Kid or whatever, but right now he is an unproven teenager who will be playing among grown men. Plenty of #1 picks didn't live up to their hype. I wouldn't give up a proven commodity for him, period.
Lake Placid would be awesome! It's a cool little town. Do it in 2030 on the 50th anniversary.

  6. If Chicago comes calling then there can't be untouchables. Also, if Chicago looks to trade nr 1 pick and Avs would be as hesitant as you are, someone will hijack that trade. Someone will offer up more than you are willing.

On a side note, this "what if" is just as plausible for Avs to accept as it is for Chicago. There is not even a one billionth of a percentage that Chicago is more willing to take a trade than it is for Avs. Chicago is in a rebuild mode, treading the Bedard pick for a player(s) "that we already know what they can do" makes just as much sense as Avs blowing this thing up in the hope that in 3 years Bedard bring them back where they are right now. Why would Chicago bring in MacKinnon when there is no one for him to play with?
