Can the Toronto Maple Leafs get Auston Matthews to sign an eight-year contract extension?

The Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly want to get Auston Matthews signed to an eight-year deal but how much convincing is that going to take? Mike DiStefano returns to the podcast with David Morassutti to discuss the possibility and why Toronto should do what they can to get that commitment. They move on to the report that contract discussions aren’t close with Luke Schenn and what that means for the off-season plans. It also looks like Sheldon Keefe is sticking around, is it the right move? Mike and Dave share their thoughts.

  1. There's no doubt the core-4 needs to be broken up this offseason, and it'll be good to do so via trade to replace some of their pending unrestricted free agents. Among members of the core, there are reasons to trade AM34, Marner, Tavares or Nylander although with Tavares likely the hardest to trade given a full-blown no-move clause, it means most likely this offseason trading AM34, Marner or Nylander, with no goals in last month's Panthers-Leafs' series by AM34 a BIG reason to move on from him.

  2. Starting around the 11:30 mark there's discussion about Sheldon Keefe. I understand why some may want to keep Keefe but why others don't. Yet the ridiculously-long near-2-month search for a replacement of Nick Nurse as Raptors' head coach with Darko Rajakovic will hopefully motivate Treliving, should he choose this offseason to replace Keefe as Leafs' head coach, to speed up that search. Nearly 2 months to find a head coach is too long IMO.

  3. liked leafs lunch but when they took it off TV on TSN it was bound to be shutdown on the radio.I am not a wanna be GM who thinks they know what the leafs need to do.

  4. Welcome back Mike. We may give you a hard time down here sometimes, but we still like what you bring to the show.

The real question is can they sign Matthews to a reasonable number for a reasonable term? If it is 8 years at 14 or 15 million, then there is no point. The Leafs will never win a cup with contracts like that. Matthews needs to look at the deals that Barkov and Tkachuk gave their team to give it a chance to win. Look at how happy Eichel was when he was able to win a cup because he was on a complete team. He also needs to remember the Leafs have already overpaid him once and he has that money now. Money you already have is worth more than future money.

Endorsement deals are the tip of the iceberg with the Leafs. The Leafs gravy train can go on for decades for beloved stars. Matthews, and his sidekick Marner, and the third wheel Nylander need to realize that they have to give up a little now to get that lifetime bag. Ok I will be honest here, I"m hoping Nylander demands to much so they have to trade him, but the points still stands for the endorsement kings.

If Matthews can't give the Leafs a deal that gives them a chance to win a cup, it is time to trade him. It really is that simple. There is only one award that interests me. The Stanley cup. If Matthews values a few percent of the cap, more than the cup. Trade him.

Keefe. If only Dubas had done his job and fired Keefe and replaced him with Cassidy when he was available last year. Oh well, at least he is gone. If Keefe has to stay, how about Kirk Muller and Bruce Boudreau as his assistants? I guess I can see why Treliving wants to keep him. He can fire Keefe later when their are better replacements and it is a way to protect his job if things go badly. "Let's try it with my coach." Still, the thought of Keefe running back Marner and Matthews together again. It leave me feeling a little sick.

Schenn, I would love to have him back. Two years at 2.75 is a lot. If he was willing to do 2 years at 2 with a NMC that would be the upper limit. Schenn is a guy who could be on the Leafs gravy train for a long time if he doesn't fuck it up by being to short sighted here.

Let's look at bringing Acciari back too. His type of game is badly needed. And how about O'Rielly? The age worries me a bit but there should be room for some discussion.

  5. bring back discount ($$) keefe ?
matthews plays out his contract !
easy to out coach the maple leafs
    (maurice et. al)
win the last game of your season !
    season-to-season. Improvement ?
our coach already has an nhl job.

  6. Guaranteed if GM lets Schenn slip away, Leaf Nation will put his picture on dart boards. If Schenn wants 2M/yr x 3, just give it to him. Can't see going higher than that though. Lets see what #34 agrees to. Hard to get a read on him. Says he wants to stay, but then the next unspoken sentence might be "just show me the money I want". I don't think they can win with him. I would not go long term. 3 years + 1 year left on current deal is good enough. Anything over 13M is out of line.

  7. What a mess Dubas left this team in. Cap hell, no prospects, no draft capital.
