Great career for Peter. I wonder how long till a team goes with an AI coach? If it loses the room, just change the voice of the AI. The coaching carousel in the league is definitely a thing.
Just a few years ago, I was stoked about the Rangers and thought they had a great future. One rough night against the Capitals and James Dolan had a big tantrum firing everyone. He ruined everything. Don't be fooled by the nice run the Rangers had to the conference final. This team has been headed in the wrong direction since then. A real shame.
If I was a rangers fan I'd be upset, as a caps fan, this is fantastic that the Rangers will flounder in mediocrity for another couple years
As a Caps fan, this makes me so damn happy 😃
i am underwhelmed and totally unexcited by this hire. Sure he has a proud career and achievements, but i've got no reason to believe that his best days are ahead of him and he's an aging coach in a young league and if this was the direction Drury wants to go in, he should have just sorted things out with Gallant.
Rangers have a small window ahead of them, Lavi will be good enough for next 2 to 3yrs
Craziest thing I heard on sports radio today was how many coaching vacancies there are & the 2nd craziest is that Roy hasn't been hired. Maybe he'll land in Ottawa if things get shaky early on.
The fanbase is furious!
No one wants this guy. I know we won in 94 but I always had empathy for fans of the Canucks because the Rangers organization shows the same incompetence and ignorance toward their fans too. The Fire Drury chants will come quickly this season.
I think this is a good fit. Peter is a good coach and The Rangers have the players to go to the playoffs and win. Now to see if they will listen to him. and if the message is the right one. I truly hope 2023-2024 is the year the Rangers return to the finals and win.
Terrible.
The job he did with the Islanders deserves more credit. They hadn't made the playoffs at all in ages and he managed to pull it off as a rookie coach, and they would have won that playoff vs. Toronto if not for Michael Peca being taken out (and his career ruined) on a cheap shot by Darcy Tucker. He was fired shortly afterwards because Mike Milbury's an idiot. Of course fans want to see Roy as coach because he's a shiny new toy, but Laviolette has been a good coach everywhere he's been and shiny new toys get tarnished pretty quick when the team's not winning.
No live tonight?
Rangers will finish with less points next season playing a more tough and greasy style of play, but they'll make it back to the conference finals because of it
I think, a good coach for Rangers… May fit to their players.
This is a bad move for the Rangers. Definitely going in the wrong direction.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t make the playoffs. They never should have fired Gallant!
He also coached the Providence Bruins to a Calder Cup in 1999
Very good coach, one I wish to see him win another cup.
Details about the New York jersey please.
This makes me very nervous. But to be fair so did Keenan when they hired him and he got us the cup so…..
Honestly, I didn't know how good of a career he's had.
Liked him when he first landed with the Caps but glad to see him move on. He has a real problem with giving rookies and young players a chance. Relies on old, washed up vets and stubbornly refuses to make changes.
If Pete is your coach and you aren't winning it's because your roster is horrid or your players have their heads up their a$$es frankly. Nashville made a big mistake canning him and in my gut I believe it was because Pete was at odds with what the front office was doing. When Pete is given proper tools and allowed to do his thing with players you win period the end.
We will see if the Rangers allow Pete to actually coach or not – it will be ugly if they don't. Rangers have a bit of an attitude problem in the locker room in my view and Pete is the type of guy who can fix it if they let him.
Big disappointment. Was hoping a more creative solution would be found. This seems like just so much more of the same old blah hockey that will be just good enough to make the playoffs but go nowhere after.
He needs to coach an old team with no young guns.
If you are a coach, you dont quit. You get fired and still get paid. 😂
Seems like a bit of a reach by desperate Drury, this bloated old retread won't do anything the Turk couldn't do…
Anyone remember Esposito trading a high draft pick for a coach, Michel Bergeron? What a laugh that was. . .not.
I honestly cannot evaluate a coach or his aptitude for a specific team. Supposed clunkers have won the Cup, so why not reserve judgment?
I do think that the Rangers need to generate more offense, in lieu of getting a phenomenal defensive coach like Trotz.
Is the Mike Babcock to Columbus official?
As a rangers fan, I'm relying on on THG to tell me how to feel. lol 😉
I don't see this man as a builder, more of an opportunist who takes a team built by the previous management and then runs it in a single good run, failing slowly after that. NYR fans better hope this next year goes well BC after that it is all downhill.
Who has served as head coach for the most teams in NHL history? 6 seems like it would be pretty high up there.
