NHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly recently sent out a memorandum to the 31 National Hockey League teams regarding the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and in it contained some really interesting information as to what the NHL is proposing. There’s a lot to uncover, but the main point I wanted to discuss in this video lies in how the NHL is proposing to change its draft lottery process; changing it from three lotteries for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to only one lottery for 1st overall this year, and this year only.
As a result, it would put the Ottawa Senators in a position where they are guaranteed two picks in the top 4 of the NHL Entry Draft. If they win the lottery, they can end up with the 1st overall pick, and either 3rd or 4th. If the Detroit Red Wings win the lottery, the Senators will remain at 2nd and 3rd. If another team wins the lottery, Detroit will drop to 2nd and Ottawa will drop to 3rd and 4th.. With this in mind, who do they take? Alexis Lafrenière of the Rimouski Océanic in the QMJHL, Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL, Tim Stützle of Adler Mannheim in the DEL, Lucas Raymond of Frölunda in the SHL, or Marco Rossi of the Ottawa 67’s?
The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.
The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

No vid on lehtonen?
With center Artem Anisimov (20 points) and his contract ($4.5mil AAV) concluding in 2021, Byfield has to be a top priority for their organization. Tierney could hold onto 1C until Byfield is ready. Or they could resign Artem but probably for a discount.
Stutzle also would add greatly add to their second line with Conner Brown and Colin White
Drysdale added to Chabot, and Brannstrom defense would be scary
I think they should do it how the nba does it. The nba has the bottom three teams having the same odds and then the top four picks are lottery picks
If this system happens they should make the odds more close for all teams.
Personally I’d like to see two lotteries

I'm so hyped for this draft. We cannot go wrong whereever we land.Only thing I have to say is that I'd rather Pierre not draft Drysdale because we already have Chabot and some great defense prospects in Brannstrom and Lassi Thomson. In the case of 2nd and 3rd overall which I think is the most likely scenario I think we'd go for Byfield and Stutzle. We can have a great 1,2 punch down the middle if we can Stutzle to play C or just have a great first line if we want him to play wing, And if the rumors are true (The rumors of Yzerman really wanting Stutzle enough to take him first) I think We'd be guaranteed Byfield no matter where we land which is just amazing for us because a bonafide 1st line center is exactly what we need in Ottawa.
If Ottawa get 1 they will get 1 and 3. I don't think they can get 1 and 4
Wow this is crazy
57% chance of getting laffy for the wing!
68% chance of getting 2 top3 picks for the sens!
This formula kind of screww up every other nhl team but I love it #GoSensGo
All of this because "what if a team won the the lottery and make the playoffs when the season resume" while the NHL probably knows the regular season is dead at this point loll.
I'm not a Byfield or a Rossi fan.
Honestly, when I saw that “best player available” quote, I became convinced they’d take Rossi… most likely with their second pick.
If I'm the Devils, I'm not approving it. Less games means there should be more emphasis on the lottery, not less. Say the season goes to 82 games, and the Devils get to the number 2 odds at the end of the season. It's kind of stupid that you're restricting the lottery in response to the the shortened season. As it remains uncertain who would actually get the slots for the odds, it should be just as uncertain who gets the picks. If I'm the Devils, I'm thinking I got screwed in this scenario, because there's a very real possibility that if the season had finished, they would have gotten to the 2 spot. Same with the Sabres. They'd get screwed in this scenario too, because for them it's even more likely that the could have gotten into one of those top 4 slots.
If the projected top two picks in Byfield and Lafreniere go up against a possible Stutzle and Rossi duo we are going to have big rivalries between Detroit and the Sens.
You got it wrong bud. Montreal can't get 1st overall. Only 3 other teams could knock Ottawa to 3-4.
Can you talk about yegor rykov. I remember people talking about him and then he disappeared
I have a really bad feeling that Montreal is going to win the lottery. It just seems too perfect that a French Canadian is going first overall.
I think Ottawa take Byfield and Rossi
These changes FUCKING SUCK
Lego- I’d like to know, why is it that in your opinion Raymond is your 4th best and Stutzle is I assume, your 3rd? Is this because you think it’s more likely Ottawa drafts him, or you actually think there both better than Rossi? I’ve said it before on your channel, but personally I think Rossi might be the best player period in this draft. I’m okay with making the argument for him only being 3-4 with Stutzle, but there’s no way I see Mason Raymond as being better. To me it’s probably Lafreniere, Byfield, Rossi, Stutzle, and then Raymond is in that second tier of top talent as the top available forward. If you’re going based on who owns the picks, I could see the order changing, but just based on projections, I’ve seen Raymond pretty consistently from 5-8
Ottawa wins this draft, no matter what happens. I mean, they couldn't possibly have predicted San Jose tanking like a M1 Abrams, when they made that Erik Karlsson trade. Right? Only a psychic would have known that the draft would occur during a global crisis, when the rules would bend in their favor. Well, maybe their whole front office is just comprised of oracles.
Or … ???? Draft a stud with their 1st pick, and then trade down with their second 1st round pick for an solid established player (or 2) and /or a bundle of later round picks to get more depth in their organization?
its gonna be byfield and rossi at 2 and 4 respectively
I would be very surprised if the nhl ever opens again
So excited for the future. In my opinion Tkachuk, Duclair, Batherson, Norris are all guaranteed top 6 forwards in my opinion. I think Chabot and Brannstrom are top end talents on the blue line offensively so I think we’re set there. Realistically I think if we win the lottery we draft Lafreniere (obviously). With second Byfield. 3rd Stutzle. 4th Rossi. We need o number one C. Which Byfield,Stutzle and Rossi cover. So we can’t really go wrong.
🤔
If Detroit gets first sens will automatically get 2nd and 3rd impossible to get 2 and 4 if there is only one lottery
It would be awesome to see the Sens draft Lafreniere and Byfield (Being from Sudbury, I'd love to see him play for my favorite ohl and nhl team). However if they end up with the 2nd and 3rd picks it would be also amazing because Byfield has been compared to Malkin and Stutzle has a lot of similarities to Crosby in his style of play.
I love Detroit and Ottawa, but I feel lafreniere would look good in a send uniform
Montreal wouldn't be able to draft first memo says you can only go up 4 spots.
Hey, I'm a proud Sens fan. This draft system is beautiful.
Sens also have a stacked goalie pipeline already, Hogberg and Nilsson in the NHL, then Filip Gustavsson, Joey D'Accord, and Mads Sogaard. Any one of those three young guys could be a starter someday. I don't really rate Mandolese, just dont see the same potential.
This sounds like great news for the Senators.
i say no matter what give the draft picks a year in the AHL to get used to the game theres no need to rush them in next year were supposed to be competitive not a winner thats why we have white, L brown, batherson, formenton, norris to make the team better next year then the year after that bring in lafreniere/byfield whoever and be a really good team
