  1. Phillips is a tweener and his lack of size hurts his chances to get a spot on an NHL roster full-time.

  2. Flames fan here. There's a very good chance Phillips doesn't succeed at the NHL level. But we just want him to be given a genuine chance. That's all

  3. Coronato looked really good at the Worlds but I think a faster, dynamic LW is needed to solidify the top 6. Barbashev or Bunting perhaps?! Both will have inflated asks though!
Lucic – back on a buriable contract (<$1.15M) or thereabouts +/- performance bonuses (e.g. 20 points incl. 10G)

  4. Wolf – AHL goalie of the year the past 2 years running , AHL 22/23 Player of the Year , only the 8th Goalie to win this award . Is he ready ? better question is , if not ready where does he play because the AHL is clearly below his skill level .

  5. One insane option is buying out Markstrom. His contract is structured such that this coming season, he actually refunds them some cap space at the cost of 4M cap the following 2 seasons…. after the cap starts skyrocketing. I'm not saying it's the right move, but one must consider all options….

  6. Neat idea for a video, you gonna do a similar one for the Preds since they also replaced GM and Coach this off season?

  7. I'd love for the Flames to move Markstrom, given that he's been fairly mediocre for a season and a half, but given he has a NMC I don't think it's likely. Wolf has won the best goalie award for his given league four years running – he's earned at least a serious look at the NHL level.

I think the Flames make the playoffs next season, mostly because the main reason they didn't this year was goaltending, and it basically can't help but be better. If Markstrom lets in the first shot in two out of three games on his way to an overall .892 save percentage he won't be playing almost sixty games. At least, he'd better not be.

  8. Markstrom is going to be 34 this season. Goalies usually begin to decline past 30, I think it's safe to say he's on the decline. Do whatever you have to do to move him NOW, while you still can.

Vladar/Wolf are both young enough to carry this team forward until they're ready to contend again.

  9. what's next? more players requesting trades to get far far away from Western Canada, that's what's next.
Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg have nothing compared to any other cities, even Columbus. The WAGs will see to it.

  10. To me it was pretty obvious that Sutter was the issue last season, so I honestly expect a team that can compete for the pacific next year. They’re a pretty complete team on paper, however I do think the biggest question is in net.

  11. I think for this team to be successful (in the short term, if Cup contention is the immediate goal), Toffoli, Lindholm, Backlund and Tanev ALL must be brought back. Those guys are real consistent, and all work hard to be ready to play at all times, plus I think they are all smart players that know and read the game well, and are usually responsible and reliable defensively too.

I know Lindy had an off year, but I believe he is fully capable of a comeback year. If just one of Lindholm, Mangiapane, Huberdeau, or Kadri had put up comparable numbers to last season, Flames would have made the playoffs.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I am not as impressed with Hanafin (though he is still young), and would be okay with moving him and Zadorov out, especially if Kylington is able to return to the lineup. If he's not though, that leaves Flames in a difficult position.

Also, I think they need to shed Lucic's contract. I know Looch has become a fan favourite for the Flames, but he's just not worth the kind of money he's being paid right now. And even resigning at a slashed price, I think is too much to pay for him. I know he brings a lot of physicality, and has good locker room leadership, but he's just gotten too slow in my opinion. He is ineffective at the forecheck (unless he already has a step on his opponent), and is useless in back checking.

That being said, I don't want Craig to panic and try and do too much this off season. I really expect the Flames can have a big bounce back year, especially if goaltending can return to 2021/2022 levels.

  12. I think that new coach is going to do wonders for that locker room, gotta imagine the Flames will be back in form next season…… or they're gonna blow that whole thing up.

  13. No expectations so better play. I remember you and me thought ,they are playing for now. They were expected to contend but the dynamics changed big time . Two players they got from Panthers they have shown they did not need. Huberdeau is who he is and letting him play more wide-open hockey will help. That will not get you a Cup but get you more points and with Tafoli I can promise you he will underperform .He played his guts out trying to get Flames in playoffs and he as stated he loved Sutter.

  14. I think backs should be named the captain. Even though hes a third line center on the flames. His leadership is very important

  15. If I was the Flames management I would wait until training camp before making moves. I'd asses the young talent and see if I could meet needs with what I already have.

  16. Markstrom never seemed to recover from that playoff series with Edmonton and clearly misses his goalie coach/goalie whisperer in Vancouver. The Flames were expected to be a playoff team this last season and if they go even slightly above average NHL goaltending they would have been in the playoffs. They've got a lot of draft picks to work with if they want to retool. Now that Treliving has gone to Toronto, I expect Calgary to no longer be a self-help group for former Canucks, but if they want more I hear there are a few available for cheap.

  17. Conroy was an absolute treasure in the locker room when he was a player, and afterwards as well. With the work and passion he has already shown for the organization I feel that he will be a pleasant and welcome presence when discussing contracts with players.

  18. I was able to watch Phillips for a couple games when he played for Victoria in Junior. He's a flashy goal-scorer, but I'd be shocked if he bocomes a regular in the NHL. I could see him being a very good career AHL'er.

  19. Noah Hanifin for Vic Oloffson straight up. Both are upcoming UFA after 2023-24. A top 4 D for a 25 goal wing.

  20. Huska said at the presser that the goal, as always is to make the play-offs. He feels good about this group in general. Considering that they missed by 3 points and had 1 point more than SC finalists Florida, I expect to see some tweaks resulting from the shedding of a contract or two. Considering that Looch, Lewis and Stone (although never say never) are unlikely to return there will be open spots for a youth movement of sorts.

  21. If I was Flames management I would look to move Markstrom, consider moving Tanev. Sign Stretcher, Stone, & Phillips. Let Lucic walk, consider signing Lewis or Ritche as a 12th/13th forward. I like Tanev and he is one of the leagues best D (when healthy) but from an asset management stand point I think this year is the last year the Flames are able to get a decent return on him, and he has a sizable cap hit. Moving Markstrom and Tanev gets Calgary a lot of Cap space. Even keeping half their cap hits leaves you with 5 mill extra cap work with. Unless Hannifin wants to walk I think he is the better defensemen to keep around.
