More NHL teams are giving players max deals/long-term extensions while they’re young

This is really interesting and something I’d actually like to see management start doing. I’m sick of getting stuck with awful contracts like Trouba’s (reminds me of Girardi, Staal, Boyle, Shattenkirk, etc.). And if the player doesn’t turn out to be so great, they are still very moveable because they’re young.

Yes, but you gotta remember there’s two sides of the coin. Players like Miller/Laf conceivably will become better in 2-3 years time and their agent/themselves don’t want to be holed into a contract that underpays them massively in years 5-8.

It’s just as much business for them as it is for management

Some of the players reference scored, almost as many points as Laffy and Kakko combined.

Players like this has no incentive to sign long-term because they and their representations will certainly hope they are not even close to their potential.

And the Rangers would never sign one of them to a mega deal, when they just have shown no consistency to deserve it

With that said, this article should have referenced Adam Fox
