Why The Toronto Maple Leafs Placed Nick Ritchie On Waivers & What’s Next!
In this video, I go over the Maple Leafs’ decision to place Nick Ritchie on waivers Thursday afternoon. I look at why and what their other options could have been. I also look at what comes next for the Blue and White
I love all the stats and sources you use to support your perspective. It's tough to stand out in this market, but I think you're doing a fantastic job. Cheers.
I'm not even worried about Nick Ritchie getting claimed on waivers. Nobody's gonna take his contract with the output he's put up. Teams aren't gonna do the Leafs a favour in terms of cap space.
If there’s an issue with the audio here or has been in the past, it’s not my microphone. The audio interface that the mic plugs into has been giving me issues. Creates white noise and static. I was editing the audio to try to correct it and that was working for a bit, but it seems like it's just getting worse. They're not cheap, so I was putting it off… But I did purchase a new one and it should be here for the next video. Sorry if thats been annoying. its been bothering me as well
I still want Appleton as an extra forward…maybe our D upgrade is there and we can ship Ritchie and whatever for a bigger deal…on another note….whenever I think Ritchie now all I can think about is how Don Cherry ripped the Leafs a new one for drafting Nylander over Ritchie. …can you imagine where we would be then….
Just because he's on waivers doesn't mean the Leafs want to lose him. He's just the best option to be odd man out. He makes the most money out of the expendable players and is the least flexible. I still want him around.
We need grit, truculence and toughness, not just from one guy. We need to pick someone up that plays that style but also we need the rest of the team to also be tough or we will never win
Ok. Why does everyone keep saying 3 of 4 for off season signings. Literally this is my 4th video and does everyone forget we signed Mrazek in the off season? I get he isn't a player or forward but he is an OFF SEASON signing, but everyone is saying we hit 3/4. Do we just forget about him? Not include him because he hasnt looked great but the sample size has been really small? Is there an actual reason I am unaware of? Im just curious
If you follow any Bruins sites, they were so happy to get rid of him. That's a pretty good tell… the leafs paid more for Ritchie than the Bruins would have if they picked up his option…
In what way does Nick Ritchie's slow-of-foot, sluggish skating style fit into a skilled and speedy team?
Are there any skill-sets that Nick brings to the table in a way that compliments the Leafs?
When you include the Leafs financial constraints, you'll be even more challenged to find a good basis for justifying this pick up. Unless your name is Dubas!
Would love for the leafs to take a run at Kevin Fiala. Minnesota has been clear with their frustrations about his struggles and was rumoured in trade talk this year. Not sure what the leafs would have to give up as Minnesota wants to also win right now.
Meh He hasn’t been the physical presence needed, the scoring would have been nice but that’s not what was needed from him. Regardless, it looks like he cleared
I’m with you on the Bunting, Kase, Bunting signings being terrific! But committing 2 years Ritchie and 3 years to Mrazek (especially when Campbell needs a new deal) where really poor choices and IMO not very thought out by the Leafs management group. Both Nick and Petr are going to cost either a pick/prospect maybe both by next year. I can’t see them having Campbell and Mrazek next season.
First off, congradulatins on the TSN intern, big things coming for you. Second, totally agree on the Dubas hate, he did hit a homerun with Kampf and Kase. I am sure every team has signed a shitty contract that they regret this season.
Kudos to you – not many “journalists” admit when they were wrong. All summer you were waiving Engvall and saying he was overpaid and dime a dozen, really respect you changing your tune and acknowledging his value.
Good takes and congrats on the TSN opportunity. That type of introspection, integrity and willingness to adjust your stance/narrative based on new information and stats is sorely lacking across all forms of journalism these days.
Slow or not they got him to be that physical force and bump people off the puck which he has not done at all. In my opinion if the coaching staff was telling him that is what they want him to be doing that and he isn’t then he would have been benched a long time ago. Really makes me wonder what the coaching staff is trying to do with these physical players because Bogosian Muzzin Ritchie lost all physicality and if Ritchie gets claimed watch how phsical he becomes just like Bogosian is now in Tampa. Somethings wrong in the coaching department here.
i said exactly 1 month ago if ritchie doesn't start doing what he's paid for he has to go because of his cap number and here we are 1 month later. this should have been a 1 year deal signing like kase even if they still had to give him the 2.5 cap number because of his 20-21 numbers.
Definitely a salary cap thing and production to dollars spent he is the most overpaid player on the team. If he had scored 10 goals by now he would've had a shot at staying. The Leafs need Cap space and 2.5 million for a forward that scores 1 goal and 7 assists in 30 games with a +/- of -5 and 19 minutes in the box is a waste of money.
I think it's gonna be expensive for the leafs in a trade to get rid of Ritchie's contract. He has been so bad that it might cost upwards of 2nd round pick. I'd really like too know why kyle needed too give Ritchie that 2nd year on the deal? I can't see many teams offering more money on a 1 year deal.

Clears cap space for the deadline. Hopefully he improved his game in the AHL, and they can call him up in the playoffs.
Grit and size comes cheaper than Ritchie

Ritchie has size but no grit… barely hits at all… simmers has more grit in one ball that Ritchie does in his entire body

One word. SKATING !

Is it really a bad thing if someone claims his contract lol

Don't have to spend much time talking about the why lol

Nice jos DTS! Keep the vids coming. GO LEAFS GO!!!
congrats on the intership!

3 for 4? No Ritchie… No Mrazek and they have Hyman….
Congrats
Well done getting with TSN. You earned it.
Ritchie is just to slow for this team. Even on the 4th line he can't keep up. He might be better in the playoffs when things slow down a bit.
Hoping we can hang on to him and see if he can get his game going good enough to get back on the team. The bar is pretty high thankfully.

Well done! Deserved, all the best!
Toronto needs to free up cap space. They are going to need a stud defencemen going into the playoffs.

He was one player I had hoped would have worked out in Toronto. To bad. Hope a team looks at him and takes him. Give him a try somewhere else.

Great…TSN internship!!!! Way to go
John Klingberg requested a trade out of Dallas today… A top 4 of Reilly, Brodie, Muzzin and Klingberg would be arguably one of the best in the league
