As we’re sure many of you have seen, it has come to light that [Reddit will be altering their API process to charge the providers of 3rd party apps at a level that will likely result in the death of most of these apps.](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/) It is believed this may also end up affecting Reddit bots, such as OctoMod, that utilize the reddit API to make the automated posts that it does.
Our subreddit will be joining a [growing list](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/) of our fellow communities to protest this change by taking the subreddit private from June 12th through the 14th.
What can you do as a user?
* Complain. Message the mods of [r/reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/).com, who are the admins of the site: message [/u/reddit](https://www.reddit.com/u/reddit/): submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on [r/reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/), such as [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/), leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to [this post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps/)
* Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at [r/ModCoord](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/).
* Boycott and spread the word…to Reddit’s competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
* Don’t be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible

Could someone explain in non-technical language ordinary folk could understand what an “API” and “API process” are? Then we could perhaps be more helpful in our responses to Reddit.

If I was going to protest *anything* about reddit, it’d be that it tries to force it’s utterly useless and toxic app every time I load their website . Then when I decide to keep using Firefox, it asks me to sign in with my Google account.
This website was broken beyond recognition, years ago. Why is *this* the hill you are choosing to die on?

Does anyone know if this will have an effect on third party login verification apps?
Also, I got a chuckle out of reading the participating list and seeing /r/gothsluts on there towards the top.
Some of these websites have grown so large that they should be regulated as public goods (twitter, youtube, reddit, facebook) similar to utilities. The EU is attempting to do this but I fear they’ll always be propped up as unregulated capitalist free for all’s by the US. This move is just monopolistic bullshit from Reddit. Competition can’t demand improvements of the main product if the main product kills off all competition.
