I don't think mackinnon viewed his contract as being more than McDavid. I'm pretty sure his old contract was 6.3 mil so he just told them pay me double what I was before, it just so happens that equated to 100 grand more than McDavid. Even at 12.6 million hus contract is still seen as a value contract.
This was the one silver lining I had seen in Dubas signing these players for the money they are signed at, is that they aren't going to eat a significantly larger portion of the cap compared to before.
The important part mentioned is the compared to before part. Mackinnon making double what he makes before is pretty much a top 4 defenseman or middle six forward. Wheras if matthews goes from 11.6 to 13.5 that's only like 2 million more, which is like saying goodbye to jarnkrok on the team, or saying goodbye to kerfoot and having an extra 1.5 .
The discourse around Matthews is classic hand wringing, and the over analyzation that happens in Toronto. Every bit of commentary from Matthews and his camp has been he wants to stay in Toronto, but we got him out the door to LA lol. When he signs his extension this over analyzing will look even more stupid!

I want to complain about Justin Bourne calling Brandon Prittam a "Generic White Guy". To me this is simply racism. To describe a human being based just on the colour of his skin is disgusting. Justin maybe "progressive" in this context just meant, foward thinker for hockey matters, like analytics and the like. But of course you jump right to degrading the value of a human being by judging him simply by their skin colour. For Shame. It's disgusting and I'll never watch real Kyper and Bourne again unless he's fired. And the fact that Nick didn't challenge him on saying that disgusting statement, makes me feel like even if Justin was fired he'd just be replaced by someone with the same racist views. I'm so disgusted that I'm probably going to even cancel my Sportsnet Now subscritpion. SportsNet, I wonder if you even have any idea who your fanbase really is?? And isn't!
