  1. 6:00 Mike Babcock wasn't fired by the Detroit Red Wings. He couldn't agree to a contract extension so he asked and received permission to talk to other teams.

  2. I feel like blash gets way too much hate considering how lackluster the team he got was/is

  3. The redwings will be back hockey isn't the same when they arent winning we have a brand new arena and have yet to make any long lasting memories in it

  4. Can someone, anyone please tell me why Jeff's still coaching?,Even in the 80's when the team wasn't this bad, they had earned the moniker,The Dead Wings, now their completely without a pulse

  5. Mike Babcock did not get fired. He decided to leave the redwings to coach his hometown town The Toronto Maple Leafs.

  6. Lollll I remember the days on the GAMECUBE when my brother and I would do a franchise mode and we needed to replace a team and we said we should take out the red wings they are really good. Lmao how times have changed, GameCube was ELITEEEEEE

  7. I get this incident isn't part of the downfall, but if Konstantinov hadn't had his career ended, I can't help but think Detroit would have won another Cup or 2.

As for the downfall, it's come out that Babcock is a big reason no one wanted to come to Detroit. The way he treated Chelios, Franzen, Modano in his year in Detroit, plus others- no one wanted to play for Detroit anymore. Holland (who's also at fault) admitted he traded Mike Commodore because he felt so bad for him over the way he was treated by Babcock.

  8. Give em a break, their in a new arena. The lions suck to…only difference is the lions always suck.

  9. Ken Hollands fault all day. Should have parted ways and allowed yzerman to become new GM. Look at Tampa as perfect example

  10. Just a drunken thought here, but I think it would be a cool series if you did this for every team. As in telling the story of every team after their glory years and how their dynasty crumbled

  11. I hate Holland he is a big reason Detroit is in this mess now, thank god most of his high priced contracts are almost off the books and Stevie Y can start doing what he did in Tampa, although I still see a few more lean years from them before they can compete for a cup, I don't want to see them constantly getting bounced out of the playoffs in the first round.

  12. "A franchise that has always known success."

Except for the 42 years between their 1955 and 1997 Cups in which they won jack shit.

  13. It has been proven that yelling out Detroit sucks is always appropriate, weddings, funerals, any time at all. So don't be shy.

  14. For a young fan Detroit only had success.

But to say the Wings always had success is ignoring the important Dead Wings era roughtly 1970 – 1986. And the current Buffalo fans think they have it rough.

  15. Wings had cap space for Hossa or Franzen but not both. Holland went with the home-grown talent.

Loss of Osgood and Maltby meant nothing. They weren't part of the core.

The biggest loss was not a player, it wasn't Yzerman or Nill. The biggest loss was Scotty Bowman leaving his advisor position for Chicago to aid his son in summer of 2008.

After ending his day to day advisor role in Chicago Bowman moved to Tampa where he would regularly meet with his former captain Yzerman.

Bowman, the greatest mind in hockey.

Yzerman left for a GM job in Tampa because he was under the impression that Holland wasn't going anywhere soon and that Nill was the heir to the throne.

Not signing Parise and Suter was a blessing, because Parise was never worth the contract. Suter on the otherhand was the closest thing to a suitable replacement for Lidstrom.

Coincidently, Holland wanted to start the rebuild earlier. But the boss wanted to keep it going and Holland couldn't convince the boss or the braintrust whic included Develano.

Babcock wasn't fired, his contract was expiring and Wings allowed him to talk with other teams. Not to mention guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg didn't exactly enjoy playing for Babcock by that point. Getting a 3rd round pick out of it was a bonus.

It's not really mindblowing that Detroit was going to fall, it was inevitable, and it was a fall that pundits/analysts predicted year after year. Took over a decade for it to occur, but it eventually did.

Extending playoff streak was more of sentiment to make an old man happy. To quote Mr. Illitch from the Mike Modano signing press conference "cuppy cuppy cuppy"

From a playoff competitive window, the Wing never could overcome Abdelkader's sabotage of the SJ series which you mentioned. Against their former assistant McLellan.

Rather good video nonetheless, but missing many of the minor details only more hardcore Red Wing fans might be aware of.

  16. Great to see where Detroit is now with Steve Y at the helm doing his thing retooling and rebuilding the team in coming years Red Wings will be a contender again. I have a friend who's a Detroit fan so I'm happy they are getting there.

  17. Don’t forget we signed mike madano for some god reason. I love the wings I have my youth stick signed by gordie howe + mike Howe (they came to my town stafford ct when they were alive) and I have a jersey signed by gordie Howe. I want a pavel jersey signed and I’ll die happy.

  18. I’m a pens fan so us getting revenge in the second cup vs Detroit was amazing and it happened on my birthday.

  19. You know, as of this moment I am posting this, i JUST found out Mike Ilitch had died several years ago.. February 10, 2017, and it.. eerily seems to coincide with Detroit's demise.

    AND I have some evidence.

If you go simply look at their playoff record SINCE he passed on.

    THey lost their heart.

  20. Having really good teams in the national hockey league is very hard to keep building the team, top prospects get drafted very high in the first round and now getting a player late in the round is like a 50/50 some will be a bust so they just got old

  21. Correction they never fired Babcock. His contract ended and Detroit offered him a new contract for several more seasons But he declined and took the head coaching gig with the Maple Leafs.
