Gudas attempted hip check on MacEachern – Have your say!

Radko Gudas narrowly missed a hip check on Mackenzie MacEachern. Could he have been called for tripping? Have your say!

  1. Former hack referee says all good. I try to look for the hip/butt of the checking player to contact the victim player somewhere on the pants. It works as a good enough guideline in real time. If the checking player gets below that it should be a clipping minor/major, or if the checking player is grasping at straws and extends the leg you get the tripping call. Here the attacking player can't quite squeeze by and Gudas is high enough so all good by me.

I will add that I think players trying to avoid being hit in the open, or in hip check cases, tend to put themselves in position to get injured. As MacEachern tries to sidestep that hit he puts his trailing left knee in a spot with a bad angle and poised to take the entire contact. It sucks but you might as well bear down and try to lean into Gudas with all your body, not the weak flailing pieces of it.
