> The Blackhawks aren’t optimistic about their chances to move up from their second first-round pick at No. 19. Even if the Blackhawks package the No. 19 pick and a second-rounder or two, that probably isn’t enough for a team to budge from a top-15 selection. The Vancouver Canucks might be the only team that could make sense. It’s no secret the Canucks are trying to get out of a few contracts this offseason. If the Blackhawks took on one of those contracts and packaged a first- and second-round pick, maybe that would entice the Canucks to trade the No. 11 pick. There should be some really good players left on the board at 11 if the Blackhawks could do that.

> A league source confirmed to Postmedia that there is a feeling in Chicago that they are going to land the Canucks’ first-round pick ahead of the draft, in a manner similar to that suggested by Powers.
> Another source, presented the premise laid out by Powers, concurred this is a direction Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has been looking, based on conversations had around the league.

I am of many mind about it. We have to do two things:
1. Get better at cap efficiency
2. Acquire more talent, especially at the blueline, especially on good contracts
In this scenario, we solve #1, but it fucks with #2. What is better, waiting out the mistakes of the past *or* taking yet another year of shitty draft selections to mulligan some bad moves.
If we can dump OEL or Myers contract, it is worth looking into.
If we’re being honest, I’d rather keep the pick unless chicago bends over backwards in that deal. Something along the lines of 19th OA + 2 2nds + Myers for 11OA
I hear all this talk about 11th overall this year being the piece to move, but to me trading next years 1st is the actual move here.
Pick a player at 11 this year you think can help in 2-3 years, this teams goal is playoffs so sacrifice next years 1st which you are planning on being a less valuable pick. I understand that isn’t a guarantee to be true, but to me that option makes way more sense than this years 11

Lets give them OEL so Bedard knows for the next three years Chicago wont be competitive and wants to come home to a team on the rise. Then we can have hockey night in Canada rivalry with Bedard vs McDavid two Canadian cities two Canadian Goliath head to head.
I laid this out elsewhere but in my hypothetical world where Michkov does end up dropping for any number of reasons….
To Chi: 11th + OEL
To Van: 19th + 44th
For Chicago to literally have the hockey Gods bend over for them by losing Kane and Toews only to immediately gain Bedard and Michkov would be more than sellable to a fanbase. Plus OEL’s cap goes off the books about the time Michkov would come over anyway so…
For the Canucks to shed that much salary while not totally dropping out of the first round would be incredible, plus picking up a second lottery ticket inside top 50? Gravy
Keep the pick.
Sharks probed last year that moving down isn’t a great move if desire is to get more talented.
Our 1st and Garly for the 19th and three of their four 2nd round picks. That’s the “you stole Bedard” tax. And you know what? Send us Dach too.
Edit: Gotta edit the comment, on account of people not realizing more than one Dach exists. I am saying Colton Dach. Not Kirby Dach. I am well aware they traded him to Montreal.
With all the talk of dumping OEL, doesn’t he need to waive his NTC?
Probably makes some sense, though this is all coming form the musings of a solitary Blackhawks writer, my question is what is the plan for the cap space if they make this kind of trade? Would make sense for Chicago to get some help for Bedard in the form of Boeser or Garland, *and* move up in the draft. But from the Canucks’ perspective, you have used up your trade assets and the UFA market is barren. With LTIR and the likelihood of a cap increase coming, they can be cap compliant as is. So, unless there is a plan to improve the team with the cap space you’d be creating, what exactly is the point? I think this writer is under the presumption that the Canucks have to clear space to field a compliant roster. That isn’t the case. Without a plan for the increase in cap space, there is no point in making a trade like this.
OEL and our 11th for there 19th. Myers can be traded and his length is still manageable.
Pusha T – Diet Coke
Not a chance. Keep the pick. Omg are we even having this discussion.
Trade a maybe decent maybe not player (11) for players that won’t play?
This team is so dry in prospects that they can’t afford it.
We are in win now mode so if we can get a good return then this trade would help us tremendously.
About $4mil and their 2nd rd pick might be enough for us to get a badly needed 2LD and/or a 3C.
>there is a feeling in Chicago that they are going to land the Canucks first round pick
I have a feeling that they’re going to trade us 1OA. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
I like it. There are some solid D prospects in the 2nd half of the first round and early in the 2nd round. If we can move a problem contract and get 2 cracks at adding defence in all for it.
If Chicago does this they will get a great winger from us and an even better prospect in the draft.
We’ll maybe get a good pick at 19 and we’ll all go on to watch the Blackhawks win more cups with Bedard and the 2023 #11 overall.
We’re doomed, there is no way out of this mess now until the core walks away or asks to be traded.
If the Canucks really want to get rid of a contract I could envision 11OA and Myers to the Sabres for 13OA, though I would have to guess that the Sabres are on his no trade list.
Fun Fact.
After the 2022 draft and the 2023 draft Chicago will have drafted:
5 – 1st round players.
6 – 2nd round players.
5 – 3rd round players.
The Canucks over the same period of time will have drafted (maybe).
2 – 1st round players.
0 – 2nd round players.
3 – 3rd round players.
Projected Cap Space for both teams.
– $668,750 – Canucks.
+ $41,844,877 – Blackhawks

……. which team do you think will be better in 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?
There’s only two ways we should accept this deal.
The first would be for OEL plus the 11th for the 19th and a second rounder.
The other option, is for Tyler Myers plus Garland plus the 11th for the 19th and a second rounder.
Both would give us the cap flexibility to do things that we actually need to do.
I know from a decent source that the Canucks are actually trying to trade multiple first round picks for Chicago’s #1 overall
If one of Benson, Moore, or Leonard is available at 11, we take that and run. Top end potential Cs don’t come by all that often.
If they’re all off the board, it’s an interesting idea trading down to 19, and get at least a 2nd + 3rd, move out a bad contract (though I am of the opinion that Garland isn’t a liability, and Myers contract shouldn’t be hard to move with 1 year left). There are many options at 19, hopefully a defenseman like Simashev, Willander.
Only way I trade down is if they take OEL.
The thought of Garland or worse, Brock Boeser going there as a cap dump only to score a ton of points alongside Bedard is nightmare fuel.
Canucks come out as losers if it’s not OEL going to Chicago in that scenario.
We can get back better pieces for Garland or Boeser dealing them separately, and Myers is only a year away from free agency so trading down to shed a contract with one year remaining is Benning level stupidity.
With how deep and talented this draft is there will be a very good player at 19, probably later as well because we all now a few teams will reach for other guys on their draft list. If this trade does happen it will be one of Boeser or Garland on the move.
Shipping Myers off now with 1 year left makes no sense, especially once that bonus has been paid and his cap hit drops. You can move him at the TDL and get a decent return for a RHD. OEL has a NMC and controls his narrative. He’s going nowhere plain and simple.
Boeser will still possibly have value to some teams. Blackhawks may see him as a guy who needs a change of scenery and playing with the next “GREAT SUPERSTAR” may be what revitalises him. Bedard needs an NHL calibur line mate and Chicago needs to hit the cap floor.
Garland on the other hand has more term bit less of a cap hit than Boeser, but he will not be a suitable running mate for Bedard to enter the NHL with. Garland is overpaid for what he brings, but that’s not saying Garland is bad. He can be valuable on a deeper team that wants a 50 point 5v5 play driving stud.
This is all hearsay and whatifs anyway. If this trade goes down and Allvin can pry away the 35th as well as the 19th we will be able to draft so real talented prospects or they may be assets in a game of “retooling” chess.
The *only* way I consider sliding from 11 to 19 is if Chicago is taking OEL’s full current caphit. If it isn’t OEL, then they can f* off. We already missed out on Guenther *and* got OEL by trading our first a couple of years ago just to dump three contracts with one year left. It’ll be the final straw if we do it again to move Myers’ final year.
Edit: Actually, if they want the 11th, they’re taking OEL *and* Myers’ last year. It’s just not worth it otherwise. Especially since Chicago could probably flip Myers at the deadline with half his remaining deal retained for the rest of the year.
I would for sure entertain:
Vancouver: 19th OA, 2nd round pick, 2nd round pick
Chicago: 11th OA, Myers, Garland
This frees up 4.95 longer term, and 6m directly next year. that’s 11M in savings next season and we still get a quality prospect at 19 and add two more 2nd rounders.
This gives Alvin a lot of maneuverability while only losing 2 pieces which are not critical at all to the core or the successes of this team next year.
I’d be open to it contingent on Sandin-pellika and reinbacher not being available at 11
If they take OEL to swap picks, based on the fact that our need is easier picked further down the order, I make that deal.
Chicago won’t. But I would.
If it’s Boeser to move down to 19… pass.
11OA for their 19OA + 35OA + 44OA. That’s the only way I’d consider it. Steep price but clearly the Hawks are desperate to get in the top 15 of the draft.
Or, 11OA + Myers for 19OA + 44OA + Murphy. Hawks are probably on his 10 team NTC though.
Moving 11th and Myers for 19 would be levels of moronic that only rivalled the original OEL trade, and it won’t ever happen. The only way 11 should get moved for 19 is if OEL moves with 11, and I don’t see that happening because I doubt OEL says yes. None of our other contracts are worth moving down 8 spots in this draft.
