In some way the Leafs are victims of their own success, when the entire season they're one of the top four teams in the league, in a comfortable playoff spot playing a lot of weaker non-playoff opposition. The Panthers had to fight to get in, they were battle tested. Perhaps the Leafs need to get worse before they can get better.
I have watched Toronto for 40+ years. They are a built loser organization. They have consistently used a dump and chase philosophy of giving the puck away and trying to get it back. They DO NOT have a defensive mentality built around their defence being helped by the forwards. They traded a GOOD goalie (Campbell) did not use a proven one this year Murray and relied on a rookie. They were robbed by a Florida team that looked like they transitioned from road hockey to ice and grabbed sticks ran at the opponents and with a Russian goalie (60% of the league has them) who flops and blocks all shots with huge pads. Borje Salming had his stick been grabbed would have fallen to block the shot. The END (for them) Break this team up. And BTW a Coach who yells and GM should be shown the door. They are scamming the fans.
Marner is a top player. It is stupid to think of changing him. Perhaps a coaching change. Nylander was amazing this playoff series. Perhaps trade Nylander for a top scoring power forward who hits and fights like Wendel Clark.
Hire McClain, you know the guy fired from sportsnet. Doug has 10 yrs as a Gm in Columbus , albeit not so good results. Doug McClain is a knowledgeable hockey lifer.
There are many layers to a core, unfortunately there hasnt been enough layers to support and protect the core. Issues of cap space that 5 players now have a drastic effect on the team. Cannot continue to watch UFAs leave because of the salary restrictions. 5 players thats contributed in their short time need to be retained to develop a strong core. 3 playere eligible for no trade clauses which will defiently handcuff them more if 3 or 4 players are not moved. Brrodie no move after July 1st 3 4.5 million, Mathews Marner no trade clauses after July 1st. John Travares going no where . Now trade one or two of top players possibly Morgan Rielly TJ Brodie . Start building a solid core around Knies , with a few more additions . Your solid supprt core is needed not 4 or 5 players are the solid core
