[Francis] One thing you can expect to hear from Conroy today is the Flames will name a captain this fall. The organization recognizes it was a mistake not to have one the last few years. . . Frontrunner at this point has to be Rasmus Andersson.

Andersson would be excellent choice for captain. He’s come a long way since since being drafted and like Giordano, I could easily see him taking another step forward if he gets the C.

I’m not against anderson but like.. Backlund please?

  3. SlumdogSkillionaire

Does that imply Backlund is gone?

Part of us not having one last year was Sutter. Heard he used it against players. Glad to see things are changing for the better.

Honestly Andersson is an excellent choice. While we may like other players, they definitely have a better read for the room

Why does the “Frontrunner at this point ha(ve) to be Rasmus Andersson”? Is he reporting something or is that just what he thinks?

Andersson is a great choice. Give Lindy, and Mang the A

  8. Even without a C someone had to stand up to be a leader. But hopefully by making it official there will be a player holding the others accountable.

I’ve been saying this for the last two years that Anderson is one of the best options in my opinion. He’s very vocal on the ice and always leads by example. You probably want someone younger and homegrown to be captain and that’s exactly what Andersson is.

People have said Backlund for a while but I just think Andersson is a better player and leads on the ice better than Backlund does. Plus it seems Backlund doesn’t want to commit to being here long term either.

I also thought Huberdeau might be a contender for it before this season but I’m not so sure. I love Huberdeau but he had a disappointing season where I would have liked to see him rally more. I think he’s great A material going forward but not quite C material

As long as it’s a Swede we can’t go wrong

Wow, rare time where I actually agree with Francis on something

The Flames always prioritize “community” with their captains. Backland has been outstanding at community projects.

Why does everyone want to name Backlund the captain when

    – he’s 34
    – an UFA
    – has recently (within 2 years) requested and rescinded a trade request?
    – couldn’t get the C under Sutter, the guy who drafted him

We’ve had 2 captains since Craig Conroy gave up the C to Iginla, **20 years ago.**

I love backlund, but this decision is also about choosing the face of our franchise while we try to reclaim our window.

Giving it to an aging vet, who’s best years are behind him, is very concerning when we’re supposed to be entering a new era under GM Conroy.
