Dubas had doubts and Shanny helped him by deciding for him.
"Dramatical", Shanny?
I know working for the Leafs is hard, but you don't need to invent a new language.
Dubas tried to f over the Toronto team. The guy has got to go. Dubas should never have been the GM. Bad move from the get go.
The year is 2035. The Leafs have completed their arduous, meandering rebuild. They are at the top of the Atlantic, President's Trophy winners. Awaiting them is an eighth seed that's clawed out from the shadows of a bygone dynasty into a playoff spot, led by a surging core assembled by an executive lured out of retirement.
It is Game 3. The Leafs are down 2-0 in the series. There is a man wearing glasses in the box above Amelie Arena, and he is laughing.
All this to win one game against the panthers
As a Caps fan, I do understand your pain, and admire the Toronto dedication. You've had Toronto FC and the Raptors win big, so there's that. Id be more worried my country's trying to emulate China, but hockey is important šš
The only way the Dubas Era could possibly end is by him losing another contract negotiation, but this time it was his own.
He openly stated he isn't up for the job…..and you're mad about him being let go?
NOOOOOOOOO
Shanahan sounds like he fired him just cuz he didn't like Dubas said and felt
It's very old school think
As a Leafs fan, I couldn't care less about Dubas. I kinda hope Keefe goes too but your right about Babcock…𤷠I hope they blow this shit up for prospects and 1st round picks. It ain't working with this core. We know that
Does anyone else think Shanahan is a pos?
i wonder if Shanahan isn't facing pressure from above, and this is one of the results? Also if i were Keefe, i'd be working on my resume.
So you wish Shanahan give us some more bullshit excuses like most of the player and coach did? Come on. Instead he lays it all out to the fans so they understand whats going on. Dubas thought by using his family as pons he could get sympathy, and 3 days later all of a sudden his family will be fine as long as there is more money. Miraculous recovery. He's 37 with a dream job and has 20 + years of earnings potential, but wanted more before getting to the end goal just like the players.
Contract ended. Thatās not being fired.
Shanny is a puppet for the board.. jc people in the comments think he's trying to build something, LOL. HE HASNT DONE ANYTHING IN 10 years here!
Stabbing his protege in the back is pretty hilarious but also typical of this rat's character.
Lol.. spezz left in protest.. that should tell you everything you need to know.
Toronto is a team where you go to die
I never thought I'd watch a soap opera. But here I am.
Not a Leafs fan here, but something's not clear here. Was it money or that they thought he didn't want to be there? Yeah, maybe Dubas was too honest in the presser, but it doesn't seem like he should be canned that quickly. Seems to me like they shot from the hip – unless they planned this all along and were just looking for an excuse, and the presser was it.
What if the Leafs don't even make the playoffs for the next 5+ years because of this change? Of course change needs to be made, but if I were in charge of the Leafs I wouldn't jump the gun or make any rash decisions immediately. All depends on what they could get for a Marhner or a Matthews, you take a big gamble on those potential trades. What would you consider a good deal for those kinds of moves? I don't think the leafs have a bad thing going as it is, they've been making the playoffs consistently regardless of first or second round results, you don't want to scramble things up too much and then become a division bottom for the next decade because of bad return investments.
For the record, I'm a Kraken fan. This whole situation is too interesting though.
Just as when you replaced your photo of a good man, great hockey player and your personal icon with the flag of a very divisive cult ideology, you have shown your dedication to towing the company line, and favoring the institution over the players and real people. Like Kyle Dubas. Dubas quit. He was not fired. Dubas made it impossible for the Leafs to bring him back. Not because of money. But because Dubas had clearly had enough of losing . And he had a very different idea of what winning looks like; different from what an organization that has done nothing but lose thinks. Dubas won everywhere ELSE. Not with Leafs. And clearly the losing culture of the Leafs took its toll. Dubas NEEDED a change to be able to stay. And he insisted on that change. But the Leafs are not willing to change. The Leafs don't care about fans. Only control. But true to form Dangle, you swallow the institution's garbage.
So, it's difficult to see why he was fired. For making a counter offer?
I like what Shanny did here. You could see the pressure effecting Kyle, and the comments umming and arring about whether he wants to be GM of the Leafs is a major red flag. It needs to be 100% commitment or nothing.
Shanny was right. Dubas was using media event to get more money knowing Pens are going to throw dumb money around. Dubas didnāt have his heart in the Leafs and Shanny saw it.
I'm guessing Oilers and Jets fans feel the same way about their teams current era.
There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. During Prohibition, we ran molasses into Canada… made a fortune, your father, too. As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for GI's on the way to the West Coast. That kid's name was Moe Greene, and the city he invented was Las Vegas. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in that town! Someone put a bullet through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew Moe, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen; I didn't ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!
That's the problem they were satisfied!
Shan was right. Dubas was never the answer. Stop being so soft. This is how it's done in the real world. I see it happen every day.
Hope they bring Millbury!!
Interesting take but. Might be good to let marner go and teach knies a bit to fill that spot. Kid has a lot more spirit, way cheaper, shows up in the playoffs.
I predict that Dubas will replace lou lamoriello after the 2023/2024 season for the Islanders
Another loser sponsored by and promoting online gambling. Sorry lost interest in anything you had to say and have to say in the future.
Dubas put all his eggs in the top four basket. Too much money for four hockey players
Time to give up on the shanaplanš
Did we miss the part where it was said Kyle emailed the president he didnt wanna be GM anymore?
seen the last cup win in 67 still waiting for the last 20 years nothing but bull from the top we have the team maybe a little more size on the d side
I hear Chuck Fletcher is available
This guy needs to like a different teamš¤£
Y'think if Carolina is swept or loses in 5 to Florida, they'll fire their GM because of a press conference? I'd like this move if it was a little more organized and a bit less like Shany just didn't seem like he was reading too many Steve Simmons columns.
I think a lot of good relationships with players went down the toilet. I'll put it down to luck if Matthews re-signs.
And above all, I wish the Toronto sports media vacuum would stfu.
Horrible take on the situation. Clear cut āDubas guyā mad that Dubas got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, trying to leverage for more money and power than the contract already offered him. Dubasā time as GM did NOT warrant a pay raise that he thought he earned.
tin foil hat on – maple leafs enjoy being center of attention regardless of whether or not it makes them look like a circus in the process, all the while at the expense of their administration/front office etc. keep paying mike babcock millions, he's the one laughing at this zoo brendan shannahan has created(that he probably wants no part of anyway). "We wanna create a solid-culture here in Toronto"; what culture? you've created a reality TV show at the expense of millions of your fans in the middle of Toronto, Canada.. And leafs fans wonder why they continue to be the laughing stalk of the nhl, I wonder.?
Iām not gonna lie I used to come here every time you lost to watch you freak out! Now I come here not even a Maple Leafs fan to watch a master at his craft!! You are great at your job!! Man I wish The Bruins had a voice(that I like to listen to)
People need to think outside of the box, yes it may seem like he was being greedy and wanted more money, however I feel like this was just a ploy on creating a reason for leaving. I belive he wanted to leave and needed a solid reason besides "its hard on my family" to make that happen. Most people play checkers but perhaps Dubas was playing chess. the end result was he didn't wanna continue being gm most likely he will not do anything for a few years as he wants to enjoy a few years of his life with his family.
He blindsided them using the media to build a narrative in an attempt to get more money and who knows what else. At best, he's been an adequate GM who until Monday, came with above average media skill…
…now all the keyboard smoking analytic disciples will have someone new to blame when the bare cupboards and lost draft pics come back to bite the Leafs in a couple of years. An Era wasted indeed.
Let's be clear here. There is no salary cap on how much you can pay a GM. The Leafs went all nuts on a huge contract for coach Mike Babcock a few years ago, so money is never an issue for the Leafs. I don't believe this was about money. I think Dubas wanted to make some moves that ownership didn't like, and because he wouldn't back down, they supposedly fired him over money. Every year I expect the Leafs to fall due to cap problems and every year Dubas pulls of small miracles. He's not stupid and he wants to win. Can't wait to see what he does for another franchise. Good luck Dubas. You go boy!
Dangle for GM
One of the rare times i completely disagree with you on your view/opinion here. Not sure what Shanny was supposed to do here given the doubts raised by Dubas himself.
The black sweater is quite symbolic.
Should get rid of Shanny and Keefe too
