Nino Neiderreiter got a penalty here for roughing, but Joe Veleno got away with that stomp. The Swiss fans were furious.

edit: JFV paid for it with NN’s elbow to the face at the end of the clip. It dropped him to the ice.

Niederreiter had an interview in Swedish tv after the third period. Apparently JV tried to apologize after the game but Niederreiter were, understandably, not interested in hearing it. “Apologize for what? He already tried to break my ankle or whatever he wanted to do.” I’m paraphrasing, but that was the jist of it. I hope he gets suspended for the tournament, this shit doesn’t fly. I expect more from a Red Wing.
This is the difference between us and other teams. We have no problem calling our guys out instead of falling over backwards to rationalize what happened.
This does look bad but in Joe’s defense I think he may have been trying to get the angle on the board and get his leg and foot in front of NNs so he could kick the puck out. Maybe he thought there was enough room to get his leg in there or maybe it was malicious. Definitely out of character for him.
Looks like he was trying to break his stick, but either way thats dangerous af.
